Visit Hot Springs will offer a series of 10 guided nighttime rides on the Northwoods Trails System that are timed to coincide with the full moon each month through the end of the year, beginning Wednesday.

The rides are free and open to the public. Riders of all abilities are welcome to take part, Traci Berry, trails coordinator for Visit Hot Springs, said in a news release on Friday.

"The Northwoods crew is stoked to announce their first series of guided night rides in the trail system," Berry said.

"The trails are a huge tourism draw for Hot Springs and we have riders coming from all over the country to ride our trails.

"What is even more exciting is the fact that a large number of people who live and work in and around Hot Springs and who have never been on a mountain bike are riding now," she said.

"The guided Full Moon Rides will give our local riders an even cooler experience of the trails and will be a great community-building opportunity."

The first Full Moon Ride will be held Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Waterworks Trail Head, 300 Pineland Drive. The ride itself will begin at 6 p.m.

There will be a dedication of the newly built Freeman Bridge and boardwalk portion of the trail system, Berry said.

The bridge is named in honor of Ken Freeman, trails coordinator for the city of Hot Springs Parks and Recreation Department.

"Ken Freeman has been working wonders for this community by way of trails for years," she said. "We are honored to know him and to dedicate our new bridge to the Freeman trail in his name."

Each ride will be a no-drop beginner-to-intermediate group ride. The route will depend on the skill level of the participants. Riders will spend around an hour on the trails. Riders will meet at the trailhead at 5:30 p.m. and begin the ride by 6 p.m. It will be dark by the time participants return to the trailhead.

All riders must have a mountain bike in working order, helmet, front white light, a backup light source and water to hydrate.

After the ride, participants will continue the fun "with a little grillin' and some tunes," Berry said.

"Bring a chair," she said. "Come shred with us by the light of the moon."

Ten riders at each of the rides will receive a free Full Moon Ride T-shirt at the end of each event.

Visit Hot Springs also released a schedule for the Full Moon Ride Series that it said is based on Farmers' Almanac predictions for full moon evenings:

• March 20 -- Full Worm Moon.

• April 19 -- Full Pink Moon.

• May 18 -- Full Flower Moon.

• June 17 -- Full Strawberry Moon.

• July 16 -- Full Buck Moon.

• Sept. 14 -- Full Harvest Moon.

• Oct. 13 -- Full Hunter's Moon.

• Nov. 12 -- Full Beaver Moon.

Berry said each of the rides is dependent on the weather. Riders should check in each month at the Northwoods Trail Conditions Group Page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/367745593976946/, for information about weather condition updates.

The Full Moon Ride Series is sponsored by Superior Bathhouse Brewery, Spa City Cycling, Parkside Cycle, Rave Grafix, Relyance Bank and Visit Hot Springs.
