Cobras pick up first league win to end season

Fountain Lake fired on all cylinders Friday night as the Cobras picked up their first conference win after finding the end zone at least once in all four quarters en route to a 34-21 win over Ashdown at Allen Tillery Field.

The Cobras (8-2, 1-6 4A-7) led the Panthers (2-8, 0-7) 20-7 at the break, but Ashdown cut Fountain Lake's lead down to 6 points as sophomore quarterback Alex Kielbach connected on a 6-yard touchdown pass with less than five minutes left in the third quarter after Kielbach kicked the PAT.

The Cobras didn't waste any time as junior Owen Barthel returned the ensuing kickoff for an 80-yard haul and a touchdown with 4:13 on the clock. Sophomore Steven DeArmon ran the ball in on the 2-point play, stretching the hosts' lead out to 28-14.

Memphis Holland responded for Ashdown with 1:08 left in the period as the junior punched it in from the 1 to pull within 28-20.

Fountain Lake junior playmaker Jack Wurz capitalized on good field position as the Cobras' quarterback zipped into the end zone on a 3-yard rush three minutes into the final period. The 2-point conversion was denied to set the final.

In the early stages of the opening frame, the Cobras' defensive edge came up big when DeArmon ran the ball 35 yards for a pick-six to give the Cobras a 6-0 lead.

Desmond Cornelius answered for Ashdown as the sophomore threat ran the ball in from the 1. The kick was good, giving the visitors their first and only lead on the night, 7-6.

Fountain Lake's Asa Westerman set the pace going into the second after the junior running back broke free for 79 yards into the end zone as time expired in the first period, retaking the lead 14-7 after the 2-point attempt was secured.

Ashdown was held scoreless in the third after Barthel dashed down the middle for a 9-yard score.
