Hosta and Shade Plant Society to meet Saturday
The Ouachita Hosta and Shade Plant Society will meet at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave., on Saturday.
Sign-in and refreshments will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by the program at 10 a.m.
The speaker will be Oscar Cross from Hilltop Gardens, Ash Grove, Mo. Cross has owned and operated Hilltop Gardens for 37 years. He has been married to his wife for 40 years, and they raised three children and are now enjoying their grandchildren. He began working in his family business at age 14 and continued until he went to college. He is also head of Oscar's Cozy Kitchen since 1968.

Republican Women to meet Monday
The Garland County Republican Women will meet at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lakes Clubhouse.
The speaker will be Herschel Ryan, who received his initial military training through ROTC and was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from Northeast Louisiana University.
He began active duty in September 1965, volunteered for flight school, earned his wings as an Army Aviator and arrived in Vietnam on Feb. 27, 1967. He was assigned to Company A, 227th Aviation Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, as a combat helicopter pilot. He led his platoon on combat assaults, resupply missions and medevac missions. He also flew many hours of night hunter missions keeping the troops in his area of operations safe from enemy attack, a news release said.
He was injured Feb. 9, 1968, just 18 days before his one year tour was completed. He was awarded the Silver Star from that battle. The citation reads in part "Capt. Ryan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving as a flight leader of a team of armed helicopters during a support mission near the Suoi CA River Valley, Republic of Vietnam." Other awards include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, multiple Air Medals and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
