Simpson graduated cum laude from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law in May of 2014 and was the recipient of the 2014 Student Public Service Award and Dean's Certificate of Distinguished Service. She holds a Master's Degree in Organizational Management from George Washington University, as well as in Business Administration from Webster University.

She completed her undergraduate degree in Criminology, graduating magna cum laude from Saint Leo University in 1996, and earned her commission through Officer Training School as a Distinguished Graduate in 1998. Simpson is a combat veteran, having served a one-year tour in Iraq. After 24 years of service, she retired in December 2010 and relocated to Arkansas.
