DAR chapter receives awards from state board

Members of the Hot Springs of Arkansas Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently attended the Arkansas State Board of Management meeting in North Little Rock.

During the meeting, awards were given for outstanding service as seen by the National organizations at the Continental Congress meeting in Washington, D.C., a news release said.

Awards were given to Joan Lovell Davis for Outstanding Service for Supporting Documentation Volunteer; Hot Springs of Arkansas Chapter for Outstanding Accomplishments in Attaining Chapter Achievement Award Level 2; Constitution Week Committee for South Central Division and National gave an award for Excellence in Constitution Week Leadership; Outstanding Support of the DAR Good Citizens Committee for Contributing $500 or More to The DAR Good Citizens Award Recipients; from the Historic Preservation Committee for Presenting an American Heritage Medal; and from the Community Classroom Committee to Martha Koon, state chair Arkansas, for an Outstanding State Report.

The theme for State Regent Junelle Mongno's term is "ASDAR Shines a Light on Women Veterans: Honoring Women Veterans and Heroes Throughout American's History." One of her projects was called a "Panty Raid." Arkansas Chapters were asked to bring sports bras and panties to the Board of Management meeting. Hot Springs of Arkansas Chapter collected $180 worth of items for distribution to women veterans at VA facilities in Little Rock, North Little Rock and northwest Arkansas. During the meeting, a challenge to collect bedding was given to the state DAR society's members. Anyone in the community can participate by calling Koon at 262-4278, the release said.

While at the Board of Management meeting, members also contributed their ideas on other projects for the year. The Hot Springs of Arkansas Chapter met Saturday in the Melting Pot Genealogical Society Library for a program about the U.S. Constitution. Chapter Chair Karen Wacaster will have programs and exhibits on the Constitution of the United States during the week of September 17-23 at the Garland County Library. Treasurer Karen Scroggins will have an exhibit at the Malvern Library.

Vice Regent Joan Davis will present a program on the Black Swan Society on Oct. 12. On Nov. 9, the chapter will place flags at graves of veterans interred at the Morning Star Cemetery. Girl and Boy Scout troops are welcome to assist as well as anyone in the community. Chapter meetings are usually the second Saturday of each month. More programs, awards and receptions will be announced for 2020 at later dates.

The chapter also sponsors involvement with Constitution of the United States material and programs, American History and Christopher Columbus Essay Contests, Youth Citizenship, DAR Good Citizens, Scholarships, Community Classroom needs, Americanism, Historic Preservation, Conservation, patriotic activities and programs for the Hot Springs, Lakeside, Malvern and Magnet Cove school districts. Community classroom activities are part of her state committee chairmanship and help with the needs of all local schools is her main duty.
