DAR recognizes community service

Regent Pam Rains presented Community Service Awards to Lynn Payette and Jackie Flowers at the Sept. 5 meeting of The John Percifull Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Community Service Award is given to individuals who have contributed to the community in an outstanding manner through voluntary heroic, civic, benevolent service, or by organizing or participating in community activities, a news release said.

Flowers is the founder of the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble, an intergenerational flute ensemble, bringing together men, women, and students from the surrounding area to perform and entertain. Many of the pieces performed by the flute ensemble are arranged by Flowers. She coordinates a yearly Halloween performance of the ensemble that benefits the Garland County Humane Society, as well as coordinating recitals at local nursing homes, churches, and other public events, the release said.

Payette is the organist/choir master at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She is the director of "Cantate," a women's vocal ensemble, sponsored by Sigma Alpha Iota, a women's music fraternity. Cantate holds an annual Christmas luncheon fundraiser which benefits music and musicians in Garland County. Payette is also the executive director of the Hot Springs Music Festival, as well as the director and conductor of the Music Festival Chorus. The Music Festival brings together instrumental and conducting mentors and aspiring apprentices from all around the world.

"Both Mrs. Flowers and Mrs. Payette have brought inspiration and joy throughout Garland County, sharing their love of music with so many. The John Percifull Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, is honored to recognize these deserving women with the DAR Community Service Award, and we appreciate everything they do to enrich all of our lives," the release said.
