Eagles rebound to shut out Rose Bud

ROSE BUD -- Cutter Morning Star junior Keshawn Blevins led the Eagles offense with 108 yards of offense and one touchdown as the Eagles rebounded to take a 21-0 victory while outgaining the Ramblers 280-45 Friday night.

The Eagles (1-1) got things going early as junior quarterback Sam Moore found the end zone on a four-yard run for the end zone in the opening quarter, but the kick was no good.

"We went on the road up to Rose Bud and actually had a much better -- I wouldn't say a crisp -- a good performance," said head coach T.C. Shamel. "I've got some guys injured and some guys that didn't play, but we came out with a win. When you go on the road, that's all you're trying to do, get a 'W.'"

Moore scored the second touchdown in the third quarter on a 24 yard run before finding Matthew Cook on the conversion play to make it 14-0. Junior quarterback Landon Watson found Blevins on a 69-yard screen in the fourth frame followed by Tyler Mace's kick to set the final.

The Eagles struggled in their season opener two weeks ago, but Shamel said that things were much improved this week, despite fighting through injuries and illness.

"We had a fumble and an interception, but they didn't cost us at all, obviously," he said. "We cleaned up some stuff. My senior center went out in the second quarter and that really hurt us as far as snaps. We had 18 bad snaps after that in our shotgun. We tried to guys, and like I said it was tough to get things going. We got a few decent ones and were able to do a few things offensively.

"My starting middle linebacker and starting left tackle on offense didn't play. He was sick; he didn't even make the trip. My quarterback, Sam, he was about 50%, and he's got a leg issue. He didn't play the last quarter and a half, so I mean as far as all that goes, I mean, we had to throw some people around and work at it, but anytime you do that and still get a 21-0 win, we're happy."

Moore was 7-for-15 passing for 93 yards with one interception with Watson completing 2 of 4 for 77. Moore led the ground game with 12 carries for 57 yards, Watson had five for 25, Blevins four for 21 and Cook five for seven.

Blevins had four catches for 89 yards to lead the receivers corps. Kaden Prather had two receptions for 34 yards, Cook had two for 28 and Tyrone Harris had two for 23.

Jessieville routs

Mount Ida on road

MOUNT IDA -- Jessieville used its superior numbers to overwhelm Mount Ida 47-13 in a battle of Lions Friday night at Preston Stidman Field.

Jessieville (2-0) racked up 33 points before Mount Ida (0-2) managed to finally get on the board halfway through the second quarter.

"We provided little to no resistance at the beginning," said first year Mount Ida head coach Zack Wuichet. "They got down and got real easy first score, pretty much doing exactly what they thought they were going to do. They just lined up ran it downfield at us."

Jessieville head coach T.J. Burk said that the team had been coached to make plays when they have the opportunity.

"That's something that we harped on in practice," he said. "Offensively, we had some guys step up, make some big catches for us. And then defensively, we flew around and tackled and forced them into long yardage situations and eventually making them punt."

Sophomore quarterback Carson Hair dominated the game for the visiting Lions squad, completing 10 of 13 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns and rushing three times for 21 yards and a touchdown.

"That kid looked good," Wuichet said. "He was what we thought he was. You start and play every snap as a freshman quarterback, you're probably going to be that good."

"Any time you can get your completion percentage up there around 80, you're doing some things right," Burk said. "Any time that we can stretch the field and pass like that, we feel like we can supplement that with our run game and stay pretty balanced."

Junior John Hoeksema put Mount Ida on the scoreboard in the second frame on a 15-yard run, pulling the home team within 33-7 after the kick, but Jessieville ran the score up to 47-7 at the break to ensure the mercy rule would be in effect from the opening whistle of the second half.

Mount Ida got on the scoreboard once in the second half as sophomore A.J. Perez broke free on a jet sweep for a 55-yard touchdown run in the final minutes of the game. The conversion play failed, setting the final.

Sophomore Matthew Huff led Jessieville on the ground with 13 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Joseph Benson had a five-yard touchdown run. Junior Charlie Davis led the team's receivers corps with five catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns, and junior Landen Daley had two catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Perez led Mount Ida with six carries for 97 yards, Hoeksema had five carries for 68 yards, and Hunter Davis had 11 carries for 63 yards.
