Wednesday's Letters to the editor

An open letter

Dear editor:

This is an open letter to all Trump supporters. On Friday, April 3, The Washington Post and several other news outlets reported that the Secret Service, at the direction of the president, signed and procured an "emergency order" for $45,000 to rent 30 golf carts for April 1 to until the end of September at Trump's National Golf Club in Sterling, Va. On this same day, various other news outlets reported that Trump Enterprises, ostensibly being run by his sons Eric and Don Jr., have sent letters to Deutsche Bank and other creditors seeking loan payment relief and extensions because the various resorts and golf clubs Trump owns have suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Forty-five thousand dollars. Think about that. That's above the median income level for most Garland County residents for an entire year. For golf carts, so the president and his cronies can play golf while hospitals struggle to receive the emergency supplies they need and doctors and nurses are routinely putting in 18-hour days risking their own lives to save others. What was that word they pounced on Hillary Clinton about? Deplorable, believe.

So the question for all of you who -- despite his lies, malfeasance, immoral behavior, and complete lack of ethics -- continue to support Trump is this: What will be the breaking point? What will Trump have to do before you admit to yourselves, if no one else, that you voted for a con man and swindler to hold the highest office in our country? At what point will you recognize that despite his rhetoric, he cares about no one but himself and his own personal enrichment, both financially and from an ego standpoint? When and what will it take for you who support him to simply say "Enough"?

I'm anxious to hear the responses and rationales.

Spiritual grandstanding

Dear editor:

Spiritual grandstanding in this time of crisis is as stupid as dancing with venomous snakes to prove one's faith. The students at Liberty College are saying that Jerry Falwell Jr.'s actions are ungodly and they are right.

Jerry Falwell Jr. is among many proposed Christian leaders like those in Florida and Louisiana and politicians like the lieutenant governor of Texas who says the old should give their life for the economy. These appear to be stupid and should be held accountable for damage done and charged as criminals for the deaths caused. Jerry thought the COVID-19 no worse than the flu and opened Liberty University and students are infected and some fighting for life. Those that pretend to be pro-life should be for all life and if not you are a hypocrite if you are willing to sacrifice others with stupid behaviors. Through poor judgment and leadership, Jerry and others risk the lives of others.

There are many who think they should go ahead and put God to the test with the illusion that everything will be OK. God gave all a brain to use and such actions are being pushed by many fundamental evangelical churches and others possessing an overwhelming amount of ignorance and stupidity. There are too many who want to pick and choose the verses that fit them at the moment. They are trying to put God and faith to the test with asinine actions.

Those that think they can be stupid and expect God to bail them out and do whatever they want to at the expense of the lives of others are not helping. Humanity would benefit if they, and not the innocent, are the first to leave planet Earth. Deuteronomy 6:16: Do not test the Lord your God as you tested Him at Massah. Matthew 4:7: Jesus replied, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
