OPINION

Another election option

Dear editor:

In light of the current issues related to our upcoming national election, I offer up the example of Costa Rica, a small democratic country in Central America.

I lived there during one of their presidential elections, and their system would work for us on many levels. First, they designate one whole week for voting. Second, once a person has cast their ballot, they are required to dip their thumb in purple dye. They do this for two good reasons: 1) it assures that you can only vote once because the dye does not wear off for over a week, and 2) it shows that you did vote. So if your thumb isn't purple, the prevailing opinion of those who did vote is that if you didn't vote, you must not care and therefore, you should not comment on the outcome.

We may be one of very few countries that limits this important civic duty (my opinion) to one day. Perhaps it is time to consider this progressive and logical option. Think of it: no mail-in ballots (except for absentee) and no way to vote more than once.

Fighting for freedom

Dear editor:

Two comments: Mike Jared, I am glad someone else has seen the obvious bias shown by coverage in this paper. Two children waving an American flag on a pier when the story was about hundreds of attendees at the Trump boat parade. There was no story, just a picture of the only "two" attendees. We cannot show support for this president in any form. If the public has not seen, by now, the obvious bias in the press, God help the naive, blindly being led to the slaughter by the ring in their nose.

Second, Noah Little, socialism has an outcome, oppression of the people for the good of the state. The Washington Post, a true beacon of truth! It has to be true, because you read it! Welcome to your new world. You have fallen for it hook, line and sinker. Only Americans that have pride can see it. Only Americans that have faith can feel it. Only Americans that cherish freedom, self-determination, and justice under the law can foresee the destruction of this great country from within. Only those that have fought for it can sense the loss of everything they believed was important. If those reading this are so blinded by their hatred of one man, that they would be willing to give up their freedoms to the anarchists, just surrender! Personally, I am going to fight for my way of life and freedom. I am not going to roll over, play dead and hope everything works out. I would imagine that I am not in the minority. Freedom-loving Americans of every race and creed can see the press and leadership using race to divide our people. Every means of communication is being manipulated to determine an outcome. As for criminals, Republican or Democrat, all should face justice for their actions. Not just those with an (R) after their name.
