Ouachita Behavioral Health and Wellness now offers Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, therapy.

"This type of treatment is known to help those suffering a wide range of trauma," a news release said.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing involves "reflecting on specific experiences of past trauma in your life. It is a form of therapy that helps people heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences. These are the experiences causing you the most stress, grief or other emotional reaction. This formal process takes time and requires the services of a therapist trained and certified specifically for EMDR therapy program treatment," the release said.

"Most people gain remarkable, life-changing success in 12 to 20 sessions. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. However, EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference," it said.

EMDR therapy helps children and adults of all ages. "Our therapists use EMDR with a wide range of challenges, including, but not limited to, sexual assault, PTSD, pain, panic attacks, violence and abuse," the release said.

OBHAW currently has three licensed counselors who have gone through the intensive EMDR training and are currently in the process of being certified in EMDR treatment.
