Teleconference to replace Republican Party meeting

Matt McKee, chairman of the Republican Party of Garland County, has announced that the RPGC meeting and Biennial County Convention will be conducted via teleconference on April 2.

"We are following the directives from the State Health Department to not hold meetings with more than 10 people to reduce the spread of COVID-19," McKee said. "We normally have 30 to more than 50 people attending our monthly meeting. We felt a teleconference would allow us to conduct the meeting and at the same time keep everyone safe."

McKee said the teleconference will begin at 6 p.m. To participate, email RPGC Secretary Jim Keary at [email protected] or call 501-786-9206.

McKee said there will be four separate RPGC meetings held on April 2:

• An Old County Committee meeting, where all unfinished business is conducted and new members are elected to the County Committee.

• A Special County Convention, where 34 delegates are elected to the Special District Convention.

• A Biennial County Convention, where the convention will declare elected all nominees in the March 3 primary election for county, township and county committee candidates. A state committeeman and state committeewoman will be elected and selection of 43 delegates and 43 alternates to attend the State Convention on July 18 in Hot Springs. The RPGC will also consider any rule changes.

• The New County Committee will then meet and will elected a district committeeman and district committeewoman and elected District Committee members who will attend the May 30 district meeting.

Vegetarian Supper Club cancels meetings until fall

The Vegetarian Supper Club has canceled its meetings until the fall.

"In the meantime, as each of us is living with the wise recommendations given to slow the spread of the coronavirus, we want to share with you several known ways to boost your immune system. These recommendations could actually mean the difference between getting sick or not getting sick. These in no way negate the importance of following the protocol of frequent thorough hand-washing, social distancing, and remaining home except for essential needs," said a news release from Drs. Carlos and Kathy Irizarry, co-directors of Ouachita Healthy Living in Amity.

Things known to boost the immune system include:

• Getting adequate sleep -- best beginning by 9:30 or 10 p.m.

• Avoidance of sugar and fried foods.

• Intentional consumption of antioxidant food found primarily in fresh fruits and vegetables such as any berries, plums, oranges, apples, kale, broccoli, spinach, beets and garlic.

• Daily sunshine exposure.

• Daily outside exercise/activity as possible.

• Contrast showers. After bathing/showering, count three minutes of comfortably hot shower followed by 30 seconds of cold water. Repeat two more times ending with cold then dry immediately.

• Drink plenty of water avoiding any sugared drinks, including fruit juices.

"Many are frightened and anxious with all that's going on. Did you know that mental state will lower the immune system? As you develop a confidence in the Lord, you will find peace that will also boost your immune system. Enjoy the journey," the release said.
