Federal funding

Dear editor:

The first order of business for the U.S. Senate needs to be reimbursing cities and states that are bearing the brunt of fighting the coronavirus. We all praise the heroic actions of health care workers, first responders, sanitation workers, cleaners and teachers, but so far we have ignored the effects of the economic crash on these people. They are dependent on cities and states for their income.

If Boeing, an outstanding example of deadly mismanagement, is eligible for federal financial help, so should be my nephew, a sergeant in the Chicago Police Department who has gone out every day to assist homeless and mentally people out on the street. So, too, is my niece, a single mother and elementary school teacher in Santa Clara County, California, who has been teaching her students remotely while managing two teenage daughters trying to attend classes online.

Congress needs to stand up for these heroic Americans working through the pandemic so that I might stay safely at home in Hot Springs Village. Make sure cities and states get their share of federal rescue funding.
