The Hot Springs Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota awarded the fraternity's Sword of Honor to Jackie Flowers, president and executive director of the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble Inc., on Sept. 19.

The award is given in recognition of a patron member's hard work on behalf of the organization and her dedication and contribution to music for the community, a news release said.

Flowers has had a "very active career as a flutist, teacher, registered nurse, geriatric program developer," the release said.

She has performance experience in symphonies, concert bands, and chamber music ensembles on modern and Baroque flute. She has performed with the McKeesport and Pittsburgh symphonies; Long Beach and Orange County Doctor's Symphony, Bellflower Symphony, Baroque Sinfonia of Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa, Marin, and Napa symphonies in California; South Arkansas and Pine Bluff symphonies; and Orange County, Santa Rosa and Hot Springs Baroque Ensembles.

She currently performs with the Hot Springs Concert Band and the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble and is a member of the National Flute Association.

"In her dual career, she has taught nursing, music appreciation, applied music (flute and piano) and social studies at National Park College and was adjunct flute instructor at Ouachita Baptist University. She teaches privately for all types of flutes: piccolo, C, alto, Bass, and 18th-century flutes. Dr. Flowers has advanced degrees in music, counseling, nursing, health administration and Gerontology," the release said.

Sigma Alpha Iota is a national women's music fraternity composed of collegiate and alumnae members throughout the United States. It was founded in 1903 and the Hot Springs Alumni Chapter was established in 1980. Sigma Alpha Iota is an organization that promotes "interaction among those who share a commitment to music."

Members of SAI are active in all areas of collegiate and community life and music. In addition to personal encouragement and support, members may receive scholarships, loans and awards in many areas and at all levels of music-related study.

"Sigma Alpha Iota has long been recognized as a leader in the field of music and provides a lifetime of fraternity contact. The Hot Springs Alumni Chapter has been active in promoting community music through their Christmas programs led by Lynn Payette at the Hot Springs Country Club, the February Musicales at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, singing the National Anthem at various community events, and giving of grants to musical organizations in Hot Springs," the release said.
