Jessieville Lions prepped for tough battle at Prescott

JESSIEVILLE -- A week after routing Fouke at home, Jessieville has to travel to one of its toughest opponents, the undefeated Prescott Curley Wolves.

The Lions (5-3, 3-2 3A-5) know that the Nevada County team they are facing this week is perennially one of the top teams in the state.

"Every year they're good, so it's not any different this year," Jessieville head coach T.J. Burk said. "They've got really good linemen up front, and they've got skill kids all over the place that can run. It's a tough matchup for sure."

Burk said that the Lions practiced well, and they are ready to face Prescott (7-0, 4-0) head on.

"It's a good challenge, and if you're going to compete with the best in the state, you've got to play them," he said. "You know, we're taking it just like any other game, and we had a good week of practice preparing for them. And, you know, hopefully we can execute, and who knows what happens. That's why you play the game."

The Lions are led on the field by junior quarterback Carson Hair who is 65 for 124 on the season for 1,337 yards and 10 touchdowns. A dual-threat quarterback, Hair has also rushed for 746 yards and 10 more scores. Classmate Matthew Huff leads the Lions on the ground with 140 carries for 1,020 yards and nine TDs.

Senior receiver Charlie Davis has picked up 34 receptions for 631 yards and six touchdowns this year to lead the receivers corps while Landen Daley had 13 catches for 320 yards and Carson Freeland has 13 catches for 250 yards.

The Curley Wolves have a pair of running backs that could cause problems for the Lions in 5-7 junior Jaylen Hopson and 6-0 senior Alex George.

"They've got two really good running backs, and they mix them up well," Burk said. "One is a speed guy, and one's more of a downhill power runner, so we've got to know that in those situations when they're in the game, we need to know what we need to be looking for based on the personnel that's in the game."

Burk said that while they do have a few new things added to the playbook for this week, it will come down to whether they have the chance to put them out there.

"There's always a few wrinkles here and there," he said. "Every week we'll put something new in. So we've got a few things, but that'll kind of be dictated by game flow and how it plays out."

Burk said that with the exception of a player who had a season-ending injury early in the season, his team is fully healthy and ready to go.

Kickoff tonight at Eddie Jackson Field at Cummins Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
