The Hot Springs Concert Band has decided to cancel its Oct. 18 and Dec. 10 concerts after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented members from being able to congregate for practice.

HSCB Publicity Chair Sandi Hyett said the two concerts, one of which is an annual Christmas concert, draw nearly 65o attendees each.

"I think (the Christmas concert is) going to be a real loss because we do it early in December and it just helps get everyone in the spirit of Christmas," Hyett said.

A band news release stated that the concerts were canceled, in part, because the safety of the band members and concert attendees are of "utmost importance," but it also says many factors were involved in the decision to cancel the remaining two concerts.

"Directives issued by the Arkansas Department of Health for community bands have made rehearsals and performances almost an impossibility, and only outdoor rehearsals are recommended at this time," according to the release. "Masking and social distancing of at least 10 feet are recommended; as well as shorter practice times, longer breaks and shorter concerts. Much of this has to do with 'bio-aerosol emissions' from the instruments."

Heyett said that as long as social distancing is a factor, she does not think the band will be able to perform due to lack of practice.

According to the release, the Percussive Arts Society has also set out protocols for percussionists, which includes not sharing equipment, each person having their own mallets and drumsticks, and sanitizing all equipment between practices, especially those which are handled, such as tambourines and cowbells.

"The Association of Concert Bands has information on studies and forums that discuss what some concert bands are doing during this time," the release said.

"One of the toughest recommendations for the Hot Springs Concert Band is that people over 65 should not participate in band at this time, since a large portion of the band falls in that category," it said.

"With the cancellation of eight concerts this year, the band's revenue has declined significantly due to unrealized ticket sales and fewer voluntary donations; however, the band has ongoing expenses that require funding.

"HSCB would like to encourage their loyal supporters to consider making a tax-free donation this year to help fund those ongoing expenses."

Information on making donations is available at http://www.hotspringsband.org.

Heyett added that the band is "really, really missing practicing and playing because we love our music."

"The band members are greatly missing the joy they receive when they make music together, and they miss the performances for their audiences. The band is looking forward to 2021 when they can resume activities and once again bring their music to their loyal and devoted audiences," band President Bruce Harvey said.
