A homeless felon on probation was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, attacking her and stealing her phone despite a court order barring him from contact with her.

Jay Daniels English, 24, who lists "city streets" as his address, was taken into custody shortly after 2 a.m. and charged with felony counts of residential burglary, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and third-degree domestic battery, subsequent offense, punishable by up to six years, and misdemeanor counts of interference with emergency communication and violation of a no-contact order, each punishable by up to one year in jail.

English was being held on a zero bond and is set to appear today in Garland County District Court. He was previously convicted on Sept. 23, 2019, of a felony count of domestic battery and sentenced to six years' supervised probation.

According to the probable cause affidavit, shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday, Hot Springs police responded to the 300 block of Alcorn Street to a battery and spoke to the female victim who stated she was at her apartment on Whittington Avenue when she heard a noise in living room.

She walked into the living room to check and was attacked by her ex-boyfriend and father of her child, identified as English, saying she believed he entered through the front door, which may have been unlocked.

She said English pushed her down and then slapped her several times before taking her cellphone. She was able to get free from him and flee from her apartment. Officers noted she had redness and swelling below both eyes.

She told officers English was not allowed to be at her residence and she didn't know how he knew where she was living.

Officers confirmed there was a valid no-contact order issued by Judge Joe Graham on Aug. 21, 2019, barring English from contact with the victim.

While officers were still on scene, the victim tracked her cellphone and officers were able to locate English, who still had the phone, walking in the 200 block of Central Avenue and took him into custody.

Once at the detention center, English was questioned and stated the victim had picked him up earlier from a trailer park in Mountain Pine "to hang out." He said she brought him to her apartment where they got into an argument and she began pushing him. He said she left in her vehicle and left him there in the apartment.
