Lady Cobras cruise to easy win at home

FOUNTAIN LAKE -- DeQueen led for just moments after making the opening basket, but Fountain Lake cruised to a 44-37 win at Sammy Lambert Court at Irvin J. Bass Gymnasium.

After taking a 25-9 halftime lead, the Lady Cobras (8-7, 2-2 4A-7) found themselves up against an intense Lady Leopards defense.

"Well, we got us a pretty good lead early on," said Fountain Lake head coach Chris Mungle. "The second half, they went to an aggressive man-to-man, had their hands all over us, whistles didn't blow. We're not physical enough to handle that so, you know. Their defense picked up, but it's hard to go anywhere when you've got two hands strapped on you the whole game."

Following a 3-pointer from DeQueen junior Sydney Casteel, senior Presley Hamric found the basket off a pass in from sophomore Bailey Helton. The Lady Leopards (5-7, 1-3) refused to back down as sophomore Belle Lindsey and junior Jera Cotton pulled the visitors within 11 before Hamric found sophomore Kara Martin behind the arc for a 33-19 lead with two minutes remaining. Cotton and Lindsey combined to help pull DeQueen within 8 going into the final frame.

An inside bucket from Lindsey started the fourth before sophomore Karlie Craver banged in a trey to keep the Lady Cobras alive. DeQueen cut the spread down to 5 with just three minutes remaining, but Hamric worked the lane before Martin iced the game at the line with 6 seconds remaining.

"The first half, we came out and shot the ball well, moved the ball well, and they were in the zone," said Mungle. "We reacted pretty good. They're down a couple of players with this COVID stuff going on. The second half, their defense, you know, they were real physical with us. We missed some shots, but I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day. So I was really proud of the kids; they made some plays right down the stretch."

A trey from Lindsey got DeQueen on the board on its opening possession before the Lady Cobras got things rolling. Senior Karli Bryant sank four treys in the first half before the Lady Leopards switched up their defense in the second half.

Hamric picked up a double-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and an assist while Bryant added 12 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block. Both Martin and Helton tallied 4 points with Martin adding four steals, three blocks, two rebounds and two steals and Helton adding two rebounds and an assist. Craver finished with 3 points and three rebounds.

Lindsey led the Lady Leopards with 24 points, six rebounds and two steals. Cotton followed with 7 points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist, Casteel had 3 points and five rebounds, sophomore Emily Garcia had 2 points, two steals and a pair of rebounds and junior Elise Dean finished with two rebounds and an assist.

The Lady Cobras head to Hope (2-0, 2-0) next Friday at 6 p.m. while De Queen hosts Nashville (12-3, 3-1) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
