Storage tank work may cause discolored water

Customers on the city of Hot Springs' municipal water system may experience temporarily discolored water today because of the activation of newly installed equipment in elevated water storage tanks, a news release said.

The Hot Springs Utilities Department recently installed mixing systems in some of the tanks that keep the stored water circulating throughout the tank. Some minerals that have settled out of finished water in the tanks may be disturbed which may cause the temporary discoloration of water in the distribution mains when the equipment operates, the release said.

If this occurs, run cold water for five to 10 minutes to clear the internal plumbing. It is also recommended to wait until the discoloration clears before showering or washing laundry. Discolored water is still safe to drink, though it may not be aesthetically pleasing.

If the discolored water does not clear within a few hours, Utilities customers can call 501-321-6200 for help, the release said.
