Rogers leads LS jr. girls past Magnolia

Amelia Rogers put up 29 points to lead Lakeside's junior high girls to a 37-28 win over Magnolia on Thursday. Molly Reeves tallied 8 points and 10 boards.

"A big defensive effort sparked by eight grader Zakoria Wilson helped us steal a road win," said Lakeside head coach Dominique Battles.

The junior Lady Rams are 1-1 in conference and 8-5 overall.

Dierks (VB) 58, Cutter Morning Star 32

Dierks put up 22 points in the first half to Cutter Morning Star's 16 en route to a 58-32 win Tuesday.

The Eagles kept pace in the starting quarter for 8-all but fell behind in the second, unable to stage a comeback. Connor McGhee led CMS with 9 points and Brayden Bridges followed with 8 points.

"Played tough for most of the game -- just too many careless turnovers let the lead balloon in second half," said Eagles first-year head coach Beau Brickell.

Wolves top

Rams, Trojans

Lake Hamilton secured wins in both girls and boys matches against Hot Springs and Lakeside at Central Bowling Lanes on Monday.

For the boys, Lake Hamilton downed 1,971 pins to Lakeside's 1,956 and Hot Springs' 1,846 while the Lady Wolves tallied 1,740 pins to Lakeside's 1,606. The Lady Trojans did not have enough members to form a team.

For the Wolves, Ethan Nash bowled games of 230 and 181 for a 411 series. Daley Young (170, 179), Keegan Ireland (149, 125), Kody Weisel (119, 148), Landon Solsby (156, 104) and Josh Iuhasz (98, 73) rounded out the scoring for Lake Hamilton.

Kevin Henson led Lakeside with games of 152 and 169 for a 321 series. Cael Braughton (183, 131), Alex Browning (127, 183), Tanner Ward (178, 119), Matt Williams (138, 97), Chase Vecintic (110) and Tanner Roberts (95) rounded out the team's scoring.

Leading Lake Hamilton with games of 147 and 130, Kensie Orrell bowled a 277 series. Julianna Treece (157, 115), Cartriona Morcan (119, 147), Ally Ross (113, 134), Bre Nash (134, 111) and Mikiah Sena (112, 90) rounded out the Lady Wolves scoring.

Abby Shelby paced the Lady Rams with games of 137 and 132 for a 269 series. Angela Villatoro (127, 101), EC Arnold (143, 77), Haley Fauber (127, 81), Delaney Hill (116, 89), and Lilly Crabtree (122, 80) rounded out the scoring for Lakeside.

Lakeside splits

at Texarkana

TEXARKANA -- Lakeside's girls defeated the Lady Razorbacks Tuesday, but the Razorbacks bested the Rams.

Lakeside toppled 1,663 pins to Texarkana's 1,606 with Shelby leading the Lady Rams with games of 123 and 154 for a 277 series. Fauber (139, 119), Crabtree (114, 135) and Villatoro (99, 102) followed behind while Hill and Pleazure Dobbs split the series with an 84 and 134 and Arnold and Natalie Crandell split the series with 76 and 91, respectively.

Lakeside hosts Conway Monday at Central Bowling Lanes.

Oklahoma Baptist named GAC favorite

RUSSELLVILLE -- The Great American Conference announced Oklahoma Baptist as the favorite in its 2021 baseball preseason poll based on votes from the leagues coaches. The Bison claimed 10 of the 12 first-place votes.

Southern Arkansas secured the two remaining first-place votes and took second in the balloting. In the 2020 season, the Muleriders finished 19-4 while 11-0 in non-conference play. Catcher Brett McGee led the GAC with nine home runs, a .596 on-base percentage and a .879 slugging percentage.

Austin Baker shared the GAC lead with 15 stolen bases while Zach Smith and Matt Kortendick paced the pitching staff. Smith shows off a 5-0 record, a 1.40 ERA and a .180 batting average in six appearance and five starts while Kortendick earned four saves and a 2.70 ERA in seven appearances.

Harding placed third in the voting. At the time of the shutdown last season, the Bisons boasted an 18-6 record while the pitching staff possessed the lowest ERA in the conference

Arkansas-Monticello shared fourth place in the voting with Southwestern Oklahoma State. Jordan Johnson, hitting seven home runs and slugging .683 in 2020, looks to lead the Boll Weevils this year. Arkansas State takes sixth place while bringing back two of the GAC's six .400 hitters -- Alex Bedard and Drew White.

Henderson State ranked seventh followed by Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southeastern Oklahoma State. The pitching staff for the Reddies led the GAC with 203 strikeouts in 180.0 innings of work.

Ouachita Baptist, East Central and Southern Nazarene rounded out the poll.

SAU named GAC

softball favorite

RUSSELLVILLE -- The GAC announced SAU as the unanimous favorite in its 2021 softball preseason poll on Tuesday.

Winning their final 16 games, the Muleriders finished the 2020 season with a 22-2 record, 12-0 in GAC play. Sydney Wader, Victoria Taylor and Elisa Favela return to the field as the starting pitchers that combined to win the 22 games. Wader was 13-0 with a 1.12 ERA, Taylor 5-1 and a 2.31 ERA, 47 strikeouts in 33.1 innings and Favela 4-1 and .206 average against and 39 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

Arkansas Tech claimed second place in the poll, the Golden Suns reporting a 14-10 record in 2020. Brooke Prewitt led the GAC last year with 10 doubles.

Southern Nazarene beat out Harding for third place with the Bisons securing fourth. Kendall Tramel and Hanna Jones return for Harding, combing for 28 stolen bases in 30 attempts.

SEOSU took fifth while Oklahoma Baptist holds sixth place. HSU was voted seventh place and UAM took eighth. First-year head coach David Martinez is at the helm of the Reddies program, previously head assistant and associate head coach. Ashlyn Taylor and Abbie Moore hit four home runs apiece with on-base percentages passing .400. UAM led the conference with 65 stolen bases in 23 games with Caroline Tedder topping the Blossoms with a .333 average, five home runs, 23 RBI and a .621 slugging percentage.

SWOSU, East Central, OBU and NWOSU rounded out the poll.
