Responding to a request from Bobby Barrett Elementary School in Mount Ida, the Baseline-Meridian Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812, delivered two outdoor flags to the school.
The flags will replace the existing flags at a Flag Day ceremony in June. The replaced flags will be retired at a formal ceremony. "Providing the flags to the school fulfills objectives of U.S.D. 1812: patriotism, education, flag respect and community service," a news release said.
Students will show their patriotism by crafting Valentine cards U.S.D. 1812 will deliver to the veterans residing in the Community Living Centers at the Eugene Towbin VA Medical Center in North Little Rock.
U.S.D. 1812 adopted the Montgomery County school three years ago and provides dictionaries to each third-grade student as part of the "Dictionary Project."
"The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn," the release said.
Founded in 1892 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, women's service organization for descendants of patriots who aided the American cause during the War of 1812.
Membership is available to women age 18 and older who can "offer satisfactory proof that they are lineal descendants of an ancestor who, during the period of 1784-1815 inclusive, rendered civil, military, or naval service to our country, rendered material aid to the U.S. Army or Navy, or who participated in the Lewis and Clark Expedition," it said.
