A local man was charged with burglary Saturday morning after he was allegedly found naked and asleep inside a residence that was supposed to be vacant.

Richard Breck Attwood III, 49, who lists a Waterside Lane address, was taken into custody shortly before 9 a.m. and charged with a felony count of residential burglary, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Attwood was being held on a $5,000 bond and was set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court. He was previously arrested on Feb. 28, 2021, on a felony count of violation of an order of protection, punishable by up to six years in prison, and was released on a $25,000 bond on May 25 with the case still pending in Garland County Circuit Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit on the burglary charge, shortly after 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Garland County sheriff's Deputy Hunter Grubbs was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Long Beach Drive regarding a trespasser on scene. The homeowner told dispatchers he was at the residence and found the front door "slightly ajar."

Grubbs and Sgt. Clayton Green were told by the homeowner nobody was supposed to be staying at the residence. Deputies noted a gray 2004 GMC Envoy was parked in the carport unoccupied.

Entry was made, and Grubbs noted three bedroom doors at the end of a hallway were closed. He announced himself several times, but no one replied. He and Green made entry to one room and found a naked white male, later identified as Attwood, sleeping on the floor and detained him.

Attwood reportedly told them he was attempting to help his female friend, 32, and her two juvenile children find a place to stay. He stated he tried multiple other residences he "worked on" and all were locked. He said he was able to climb through a window at this residence and unlock the front door to let his friend and her children in.

He claimed he was allowed to stay there because his friend "Karen" had rented it and noted his female friend and her children "had nothing to do with breaking in."

Grubbs began checking the rest of the residence and making multiple announcements and finally, a woman and her two children emerged from one of the other rooms and they were detained.

The Department of Human Services was contacted about the children but reportedly did not respond. The homeowner stated the previous renter had been legally evicted from the residence two months earlier and that he had never seen or met Attwood before.

Green noted the kitchen window where Attwood made entry was damaged and a pair of pliers was found nearby. He noted the lock had been "broken by force." At that point, Attwood was arrested on the burglary charge.
