A local man was charged Sunday night with assaulting his mother while allegedly intoxicated, with a report saying his blood alcohol content later registered almost three times the legal limit.

Chase Michael Layman, 23, of 6030 Highway 7 north, was taken into custody at his residence shortly after 7 p.m. and charged with third-degree domestic battery, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.

Layman was being held on zero bond and was set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, around 6 p.m. Sunday, Garland County sheriff’s Deputy Charles DeLaHunt was dispatched to the Highway 7 north residence regarding a “disorderly subject,” where the female resident, 52, said her son was “out of control” and had caused injuries to her.

DeLaHunt arrived at the residence and made contact with the mother who said her son, who lives with her, “became out of control” and “got in her face” and began yelling at her.

She said he grabbed her arm and began to push and shove her, injuring her arm. She said he then grabbed her purse and tried to pull it away from her and during the altercation she sustained a cut on her right forearm.

She noted Layman had been “drinking heavily” during the day. The mother declined medical treatment, but was issued a Laura’s card for victims of domestic abuse.

DeLaHunt located Layman in his bedroom and noted he had a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his breath, his speech was slurred and he had bloodshot, watery eyes and was unsteady on his feet.

He was taken to the detention center where he submitted to a Breathalyzer test which registered his blood alcohol content at 0.232%, almost three times the legal limit. It was noted Layman was also “highly argumentative” with the jail staff.
