ALPINE -- Mary A. Caruthers, age 94, of Alpine, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, in Arkadelphia.
She was born Nov. 13, 1927, one of nine children to Willis and Delsie Jones Howell. Mary was a member of Amity First Baptist Church.
Mary attended beauty school when she was in her 40s and was a beauty operator for several years. She worked for Sutton Lumber Company until she was in her 70s. She learned to drive while she was in her 50s when her husband was not able to do so. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers and working in the yard. Mary sewed and made clothing for her family. She assisted her husband in building and renovating their home.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Virgal Caruthers on July 19, 2017; her son, Wayne Caruthers; her grandson, Christopher Wayne Fagan; three brothers, Horace, Fay Dean and Dewey Howell; and one sister, Thelma Wilson.
Survivors are one daughter, Pauline and husband, Thomas Fagan of Alpine; one brother, Wick Howell of Glenwood; three sisters, Sue and husband, Herbert Watts of Hot Springs, Mamie and husband, Bennie Fite of Arkadelphia and Dorothy Cato of Arkadelphia; three grandchildren, Tonya of Colorado, Shannon and husband, Barry McCracken of Oklahoma and Steven and wife, Crystal Caruthers of Norman, Okla.; seven great-grandchildren, Brittany and Braxton Fagan, Estalie, Brody and Mirimonti Barnes, Oakley and Zorah Caruthers.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today, Nov. 17, at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Amity First Baptist Church, with Brother Johnny McAnally and Brother Carl Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Alpine Cemetery.
