PODCAST: Undefeated Prescott rolls past Jessieville

JESSIEVILLE -- Showing speed that Jessieville couldn't possibly simulate in practice, Prescott turned Friday night's game here into a virtual track meet.

The Curley Wolves scored 22 unanswered points in the last 14:16 of clock time for a 50-19 conference victory at Don Phillips Field. Prescott improved to 9-0, setting up a first-place showdown in 3A-5 against visiting Glen Rose Friday night. The 8-1 Beavers, also 6-0 in conference, won 42-0 over Horatio, Jessieville's opponent Thursday night in Sevier County.

Jessieville, which had won four straight games since a 46-29 road loss to Glen Rose Sept. 24, dropped to 5-3, 4-2 in conference. The Lions have a one-game lead over two teams they have beaten, Bismarck and Centerpoint, for 3A-5's No. 3 playoff seed.

Jessieville, down 20-13 at halftime, pulled within 28-19 on senior Matthew Huff's run with 2:16 left in the third quarter. The Lions barely had time to celebrate before Prescott senior Jaylon Hopson returned the ensuing kickoff for a score. Junior quarterback Carston Poole ran for two points and a 36-19 lead.

Jessieville's offense, led by Huff and four-year starting quarterback Carson Hair, began to slow and Prescott took immediate advantage. Hopson scored from six yards out with 10:13 left for a 44-19 lead. The Curley Wolves added a superfluous touchdown with 2:16 left, giving them a 3A-high 416 points for the season.

Prescott has scored at least 50 points in every game except a 49-13 decision against 5A Hope. The Nevada County team's only scare came from Centerpoint, 50-41 Oct. 8.

Brennton Johnson went over from one yard out on fourth down and Allison Quinonez kicked the point for a 7-6 Jessieville lead late in the first quarter. Omarrion Dickens then caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Poole, whose two-point conversion regained the lead for Prescott, 14-13. Hopson broke a 20-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.

Prescott has won nine straight games from Jessieville since 2010, including a 2011 rematch in the playoffs. The closest margin of victory was 23 points twice, most recently when Jessieville scored 30 in 2017.

Brian Glass, a Prescott alum and 18-year assistant football coach, is 19-1 as the Curley Wolves' head coach. Their only loss under Glass came to McGehee, 44-19 in McGehee in the quarterfinals of the COVID-ravaged 2020 season.

Hair was 6-for-12 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown and added 81 yards and a score on the ground. Huff had 35 carries for 169 yards and a touchdown, and Carson Freeland caught one pass, a 26-yard touchdown strike. Huff also had three catches for 48 yards
