Lakeside downs Lake Hamilton in junior high volleyball

Lakeside's freshman Rams volleyball team handled Lake Hamilton 2-0 on the road Tuesday.

Lakeside (14-4) took wins of 25-9 and 25-10.

Alexis Kessler registered five kills, two aces and 14 digs while Lola Rucksthul and Ella Witherington chipped in with two kills each. Rucksthul also accounted for four blocks and three digs.

Claire Vance added four blocks and three digs while Maddie Kinder registered nine digs against the Wolves. Laynee Throgmartin contributed 10 assists, three digs and 11 aces.

The eighth-grade Rams A team (9-6) took down the Lady Wolves in two extremely close 26-24 sets. Sophie Botter accounted for seven service points while Baryett Janes added five service points.

The eighth-grade Rams B team (3-3) lost 2-0 to Lake Hamilton after 25-18 and 25-13 sets. Adelyn Sanders led the team with six service points.

ā€¢ The junior Rams traveled to North Little Rock Monday night and returned home with three wins.

The freshman Rams took down the junior Lady Charging Wildcats in two sets 25-16 and 25-15. Kessler led the team with five kills, 11 digs and three aces. Alyssa Nugent, Vance and Rucksthul all added four kills each.

Kinder controlled the back row with a total of 16 digs while Throgmartin set up her teammates with 14 assists.

Lakeside's eighth-grade A team also won in two sets behind scores of 25-22 and 25-19. Madelyn Slaton led the team with seven aces while Botter added six service points.

The eighth-grade B team won their two sets 25-13 and 25-19 behind six service points from Riley Dean. Sanders and Jaylen Brakebill added five each.

FOUNTAIN LAKE TAKES DOWN BAUXITE

FOUNTAIN LAKE -- Fountain Lake's volleyball teams hosted Bauxite Tuesday night as the Lady Cobras won 3-2, the junior varsity team split 1-1, and Bauxite won the junior high match 2-1.

In the varsity match, after Bauxite won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19, Fountain Lake (5-4, 4-0 4A-7) battled back to win the final three 25-19, 25-13 and 15-12.

Faith Jones registered 17 service points and 30 digs while Sophie Skinner added eight service points, 15 kills, eight digs, 39 assists and four blocks. Kara Martin contributed 17 kills, nine digs and three blocks.

The junior varsity Cobras split their match 19-25 and 25-20 as Gabby Garcia accounted for eight service points and 11 assists.

A close battle saw Bauxite win the junior high contest in the third set by a score of 15-13. Katie Dillinger led the junior Cobras with 13 service points, 16 assists and five digs.

LADY COBRAS DOMINATE ARKADELPHIA

FOUNTAIN LAKE -- Fountain Lake's tennis team split against Arkadelphia Monday.

The Lady Cobras won both their singles matches behind performances from Lainey Mungle (8-2) and Paige Davis (8-0). Fountain Lake swept all three of its girls doubles matches as Angela Coriaty and Emma Kaumeyer (8-1), Aedan Kaumeyer and Emily Gaona (8-3), and Mungle and Mary Drakes (8-1) all picked up wins.

The Fountain Lake boys found it a little bit harder against the Badgers. Andrew Bledsoe (2-8) and Andrew Lydon (4-8) both fell in their singles matches.

Bledsoe and Lydon were able to pick up an 8-5 doubles win. However, Aaron Breshears and Paul Combs (2-8) and Bo Baker and John Carter (1-8) lost their doubles matches.

NPC FALLS IN ROAD MATCHES

Both the men's and women's National Park College soccer teams struggled on the road at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain and Murray State College.

The women fell to Rich Mountain 6-1, while the men lost 3-1 Friday.

During the women's match, Rich Mountain scored four goals in the first half on the Bucks' way to victory. NPC freshman Yessenia Vargas notched the lone goal for the Nighthawks in the 61st minute.

NPC freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Mize made 10 saves at Rich Mountain.

Early goals for the Bucks in both the first and second halves of the men's game were too much for the Nighthawks to overcome. NPC freshman Adam Cerna was able to add a goal for the Nighthawks in the 58th minute while freshman goalkeeper Xavier Marquez made five saves.

The Nighthawk women lost 5-1 at Murray State while the men fell 2-1 Sunday.

Despite falling 5-1, Vargas was able to add another goal to her tally for the Nighthawk women in the 85th minute. Mize made another 10 saves at Murray State and leads the NJCAA Region II with 110 saves.

The NPC men actually jumped out to an early lead in the third minute when freshman Yael Sandoval hit the back of the net.

However, Murray State would bounce back with a goal in both the first and second half for the victory.

Both Nighthawk teams travel to Seminole State College this afternoon. The women kick off at 2 p.m. and the men follow at 4 p.m.

OBU MOVES UP IN POLLS

ARKADELPHIA -- After an undefeated 3-0 start to the season, the Ouachita Baptist University football team moved up one spot in both of the NCAA Division II football polls.

The Tigers beat Arkansas Tech 38-24 Saturday for their third win of the season. OBU moved up to the No. 8 spot in the American Football Coaches Associated Top 25 poll and moved up to the No. 7 spot in the D2Football.com Top 25.

OBU also jumped to No. 8 in the NCAA Power 10 rankings, and the Tigers' win over Arkansas Tech marked the 30th consecutive conference victory for OBU.

In an intriguing in-state matchup, the Tigers will take on Harding Saturday. The Bisons sit at No. 22 in the D2Football.com poll and Harding leads the nation with 380 rushing yards per game.

OBU sits second in that category with 290 per game.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Searcy.

GAC ANNOUNCES SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE -- The Great American Conference's men's and women's soccer players of the week were announced Tuesday.

Northeastern State's Sam Scarth earned the men's offensive player honors while Rogers State's Michael Turner and Declan Viljoen picked up defender and goalkeeper honors.

Scarth came off the bench and scored a hat trick while also registering two assists in a 7-1 win against Saint Martin's.

Turner played 196 minutes on the backline for the Hillcats and only allowed two goals. In a 1-0 double overtime win over UT Tyler, he made an important play in front of goal to keep the Patriots from scoring.

Viljoen made three saves and registered his fourth shutout of the season in the 1-0 win.

Northwestern Oklahoma forward Tiarra Campbell earned the league's women's offensive award, OBU's Josilyn Kispert earned the defensive award, and East Central's McKenna Leveling picked up the keeper award.

Campbell scored four goals in a 5-1 win, while Kispert scored a goal in the Tigers' 3-0 cleansheet victory over UT Tyler.

Leveling set the East Central and GAC record for saves in a single match with 20 in East Central's double overtime match against Midwestern State.

GAC ANNOUNCES VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE -- The GAC recently announced the volleyball players of the week.

Southern Arkansas' Morgan Schuster won setter of the week after averaging 9.29 assists per set across four games.

Henderson State's Makenzie Thomas won co-defensive player of the week with SWOSU's Markenzie Benoit. Thomas averaged 6.08 digs per set at the Reddie-Tiger Invitational while Benoit picked up 10 blocks in a win over a ranked opponent.

East Central's Emma Strickland won offensive player of the week after averaging 3.88 kills and 4.31 points per set against Texas Woman's and Southern Nazarene.

HSU'S CURRY EARNS WEEKLY OFFENSIVE AWARD

RUSSELLVILLE -- Henderson State wide receiver L'liott Curry was among the GAC's f ootball players of the week, sharing offensive honors with Oklahoma Baptist quarterback Preston Haire.

Curry caught 10 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns in the Reddies' 58-18 win over Arkansas-Monticello. Haire completed 25 of 34 passes for 310 yards and six touchdowns in a win against Northwestern Oklahoma State.

East Central's RJ Williams earned the league's defensive award after leading the Tiger defense with seven tackles and a pick six against Southern Nazarene.

Oklahoma Baptist's Keilahn Harris won the special teams honor with an 87-yard kick return for a touchdown in a 56-42 win over NWOSU.
