Garland County Master Gardeners have chosen the home of Jerry and Ellen Spakes at 116 Foxwood as their August Yard of the Month.

"On the east side of the home, you will find a large bed filled with a backdrop of Knockout Roses, and a border of variegated Liriope. Splashes of color are found throughout the bed with pink Vinca, Bubblegum Petunias and Begonias. They have added a rock waterfall as well as various pieces of yard art with seating to enjoy this area. As you walk to the north side of the home (their back yard) you will find two small raised bed gardens where they grew tomatoes, green beans, squash, radish, onions, and okra. He, also, planted Maximilian sunflowers for pollination. Jerry will soon be planting his winter garden. Interestingly, he stated that he has had success protecting his bounty from deer and other wildlife," a news release said.

"Closer to the front door texture and balance are key to adding curb appeal to the residence. Tall Ornamental Pampas grass is the backdrop for a combination of cream and fuchsia crape myrtles that are in full bloom. A lone Crimson Queen Japanese Maple stands to the left of the porch with balloon flowers below. As you approach the side entrance you are greeted by two massive, well-shaped Kaleidoscope Abelia, and a blooming white Althea (Rose of Sharon) Shrub. Below are mounds of Gerber Daisies. The perimeter of the home includes various foundation plantings including gardenia, holly, and barberry," it said.
