Youths 8-13 years old are welcome to enter the Elks' 50th annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest on Jan. 22.

The contest will be held at the Park Magnet School gym, 617 Main St., with registration starting at 12:30 p.m. and competition starting at 1 p.m.

The contest is free to all contestants, with three age groups for boys and three age groups for girls. The top three free-throw shooters, best of 25 attempts, in each of the age groups will be awarded trophies, and first-place winners will progress on to the state finals, to be held in Hot Springs on Feb. 5, also at Park Magnet gym.

"The state finals will feature winners from all 13 Elk Lodges in Arkansas, and state winners will continue on to compete at regional and national tournaments. The Elks sponsor the winners and their parents for participation at the competitions, paying expenses," a news release said.

"This is the 50th year for the Elks Hoop Shoot, which is very popular all across the US. All Elks Lodges across the U.S. participate annually. Elks believe the Hoop Shoot teaches children to work hard toward goals, teaches good sportsmanship and determination, develops 'grit' and bravery, along with encouraging a sense of community," the release said.

Call Mike Muldoon, Hoop Shoot chairman, at 501-318-7443 for more information.
