A South Carolina man arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant was soon facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly tried to smuggle meth and ecstasy into the Garland County Detention Center.

David Chase McGuire, 27, who lists a Winnsboro, S.C., address, was initially taken into custody at Garland County District Court, where he was appearing on some traffic violations, on the failure to appear warrant stemming from some previous traffic violations.

Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, McGuire was charged with two counts of furnishing prohibited articles, each punishable by up to 20 years in prison, possession of meth with purpose to deliver and possession of ecstasy with purpose to deliver, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

McGuire was being held on an $18,000 bond and was set to appear Wednesday in district court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, around 10:30 a.m., Garland County sheriff's Cpl. Russ Severns was called to district court to transport McGuire on the failure to appear warrant. He was reportedly searched prior to being transported and asked if he had any contraband, and he reportedly said no.

Severns was given a black plastic bag containing McGuire's belongings, including his wallet, by a bailiff. McGuire was searched again at the detention center.

During the search, Cpl. William Coutch removed McGuire's wallet from the property bag and opened it to get McGuire's South Carolina driver's license. After removing the license, it was allegedly discovered there were two small baggies in a compartment behind where the license had been.

One baggie, which was covered in small images of scorpions, was found to contain a white substance that later tested positive for meth, and the other contained a brown substance that later tested positive for MDMA, or ecstasy.

McGuire reportedly admitted the wallet belonged to him, but would not comment on the substances found.
