The July exhibit at Justus Fine Art Gallery, 827-A Central Ave., will focus on "Art and Story," featuring a selection of work by artists including Randall Good, Gary Simmons, Jeri Hillis and Rebecca Thompson.

The show will host a reception from 5-9 p.m. Friday as part of the monthly Gallery Walk in downtown Hot Springs.

The exhibit will be on display through July 31.

Following the exhibit opening, the second of the gallery's "Tea Talks" will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday.

Good will present a short talk on "A Fertile Partnership: Story and Art" with Simmons and Hillis also discussing the role that story plays in their own work.

In the 2007 exhibit "In The Company of Angels," Good began to "explore a personal creation myth inspired by a host of sources from the classics of Homer and Ovid, through the myths and religions of the world, ultimately touching upon the troubled nature of beings blessed or burdened by self-awareness," a news release said.

"This new subject matter Good developed in concert with his writings, is presented through the tradition of Florentine disegno merged with a highly personal interpretation of the human figure to become a vehicle for remarkably modern expression," the release said.

"I believe that life transcends mere existence and achieves the profound through an engagement with the fundamental concepts of love, loss, honor and sacrifice. My works, whether they spring from my original content or the canon of religious and mythic stories, present beings at the pivotal moment when such interactions affect an essential change. I express these archetypal elements in paintings, drawings and writings by employing a compositional and figural language that invites the viewer, not only into an intellectual consideration, but a personal contemplation of their own response to life and its fundamental principles," Good said in 2015.

Simmons "has also drawn upon mythology in his work, along with elements of classic literature, and personal journaling while traveling and sketching," the release said.

Coupled with his arts education and successful career as an artist and arts educator, Simmons holds a Master's in English and American Literature.

His expertise in writing and communication has been beneficial in teaching, as well in writing and illustrating "The Technical Pen" originally published by Watson-Guptill in 1992 and then reprinted by Echo Point Books in 2013.

Hillis' collages combine painting and drawing, along with old stamps, envelopes, and writing.

"The pieces tell a story of beauty, fragility, time, and mark making."

Along with her professional art practice, Hillis is also an arts educator.

Thompson's loosely rendered oil paintings "contain a sense of a captured moment in the continuum of life, a glimpse into a narrative that the viewer is also able to envision being a part of."

Owned by artist Dolores Justus, the gallery offers a wide range of original art including sculpture, paintings, ceramics and photography, by recognized artists.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment.
