Top officials from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville gave a presentation to Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts students last week promoting the opportunities offered at the university.

Chancellor Charles F. Robinson, vice provost for enrollment management, Suzanne McCray and senior admissions counselor for central Arkansas, Radeanna Garcia, presented information about the college on the hill and general advice about applying to college on Wednesday.

"I know that if you're here, you're intellectually ambitious," McCray said, noting U of A has become a destination university, drawing prospective students from around the nation and the world.

In one of the most rapidly-developing regions in the country, McCray explained the opportunities offered there both for education and for launching a career.

"Just like you, we live in a great neighborhood," she said. "We've got Walmart, we've got Tyson."

She said the university has produced more Truman scholars than any other SEC college and is in the top 20 institutions for Goldwater scholarships, as well. These academic achievements are just one of the possible draws for the college that is already partnered with ASMSA.

The trio also gave general information about scholarships and the college application process. Garcia, who lives in the area and works with area students, discussed upcoming events for students looking to become Razorbacks while also sharing deadlines and the benefits of applying early.

Then the three officials fielded questions from the students on topics such as music programs, study abroad, resident assistance pay, summer camps, average yearly costs, transfer credits and dorms.

"When you come to campus as a freshman, you're gonna be wide-eyed," Robinson said.

Hoping to prepare students as early as possible, the group remained after the formal presentation to talk in further detail about students' concerns and questions.

Having a special relationship with the University of Arkansas System, ASMSA are especially equipped to transfer credits and often start their undergraduate studies with a year already completed.

"I think we've got a great resource and a great team of folks in the U of A," said Corey Alderdice, director for ASMSA.
