HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- During its annual State Council at Diamante Country Club, members of the United States Daughters of 1812 elected new state officers.

Sworn in by Parliamentarian and Honorary State President Kay Tatum, the ladies will serve in their positions for three years. The Arkansas Society was organized in 1906 and has served Arkansas since.

"Concentrating on education, historical preservation and patriotism, Arkansas U.S.D. 1812 supports JROTC and ROTC throughout the state. It has set grave markers of Veterans of the War of 182, donated thousands of dollars in donations and has volunteered thousands of hours for our current Veterans," a news release said. The group has presented dictionaries to third grade students annually and awards annual scholarships to the Collage of the Ozarks.

Membership is not limited to veterans who have served in the War of 1812. Membership is available to women 18 and older who can offer satisfactory proof that they are lineal descendants of an ancestor who, between 1784 and 1815 inclusive, "rendered civil, military or naval service to our country," the release said. Juniors, ages birth to 18, are eligible for membership.

Membership inquiries can be made to Registrar Jayne Spears at [email protected] or to President Sheila Beatty at [email protected].
