Tyren Tidwell, a member of the Hot Springs High School graduating Class of 2014, was chosen as the first recipient of a scholarship awarded by the HSHS graduating Class of 1968.

Tidwell earned his International Baccalaureate diploma in May and is attending the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he is majoring in Biology. He graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 3.67 and ranked 13th out of 119 students in his class.

Tidwell was a member of the Key Club, president of the Future Business Leaders of America, student council and National Honor Society. He was twice named All-Conference and All-State in track and field.

The Class of 1968 raised enough funds to award five scholarships to outstanding Hot Springs graduates. The funds were raised through personal donations of class members, and a silent auction held at the 40th and 45th class reunions.

The '68 class plans to award one scholarship per year for the next four years to a graduating HSHS student and hopes to be able to continue the award. Funds for future scholarships will be provided by donations and proceeds from the 50th class reunion scheduled for 2018.

A Scholarship Committee made up of 1968 graduates said they were proud to select Tidwell, who they called an "outstanding young man and Trojan."
