Jessieville girls pull away late

GLEN ROSE -- Back and forth with Glen Rose for three quarters, the Jessieville Lady Lions saved their best for last Friday night.

Clinging to a slim 33-30 lead, the Lady Lions (7-8, 4-2) erupted for 21 points in the final period, while limiting the Lady Beavers (8-6, 2-3) to just six points to pull away for a 54-36 win.

Senior Makayla Wilson paced Jessieville with 16 points, while junior Jaidyn Fortenberry had 13 points and junior Amy de Haas scored 11 points.

Trailing 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Lions bounced back to take a 22-18 lead into halftime. Glen Rose won the third quarter 12-11 before Jessieville pulled away with a fourth quarter surge.

Sophomore Lilliana Fehrenbacher scored seven points for the Lady Lions, while junior Lexi Bassett scored three points and junior Cassidy Tucker had two points.

The Lady Lions will host Malvern (3-11, 1-5) Tuesday night at Jessieville Sports Arena.

LAKESIDE-HOPE

HOPE -- In the midst of a second-half turnaround, Lakeside's senior boys edged defending 5A-South champion Hope 37-36 Friday night.

Junior Tazz Glover paced the Rams (3-11, 2-3) with 10 points. Fellow juniors Ethan Eastwood and Sawyer Lamb each finished with nine points.

Lakeside has now won two straight after losing 11 of its first 12 games. The Rams host Camden Fairview (8-5, 3-2) Tuesday night at Lakeside Athletic Complex before traveling to Magnolia (6-4, 1-4) on Jan. 12.

HOT SPRINGS-CAMDEN FAIRVIEW

CAMDEN -- Riding a six-game winning streak, the Hot Springs Lady Trojans continued to stake their claim as a Class 5A contender Friday night at Camden Fairview.

After building a 28-11 advantage in the first quarter, the Lady Trojans (14-3, 5-0) held Fairview (6-6, 3-3) to just two points in the second quarter before cruising to a 61-28 win.

Hot Springs outscored the Lady Cardinals 13-11 in the third quarter and 7-2 in the fourth to set the final margin. Senior Imani Honey led the way with 22 points for the Lady Trojans, while senior Ariana Guinn finished with 16 points and senior Trinitee Nevels added six points.

Hot Springs travels to Texarkana (6-8, 2-2) Tuesday night before hosting crosstown rival Lake Hamilton (7-9, 1-0) on Jan. 16 at Trojan Fieldhouse.

HOOP SHOOT

Hot Springs Elks Lodge No. 380 is sponsoring the local stage of the 46th National Hoop Shoot free throw contest today at Hot Springs World Class High School, 701 Emory St.

Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the contest will begin at 3 p.m. Participation is free for participants at each stage of the competition.

Divisions are determined based on children's ages as of April 1, 2018. Male and female participants are separated into three divisions for those ages 8--9, ages 10--11 and 12--13.

The local winner will represent the Hot Springs Lodge in the state contest on Feb. 3 at Hot Springs Intermediate School. State winners advance to the four-state regional contest in Paris, Tenn., in March to compete with the top shooters from Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee.

Regional winners advance to the 2018 Hoop Shoot National Finals April 21 in Chicago. National champions have their names permanently inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
