Thursday's Letters to the Editor

How is your aim?

Dear editor:

The second meeting of "Stomp Out Socialism" will be held at the Garland County Library this Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. in Room D.

Our intention is to expose the dark side of socialism to the American public. It is high past time we fight back against the ignorance that has blinded young and old alike of the reasons socialism always fails, leaving people in far worse condition than they could have ever imagined would happen to them.

Having lived in Miami during Fidel's takeover of Cuba and knowing people who lived in Nicaragua when socialist Ortega took over that country, I don't need anyone to tell me what I learned firsthand about socialism. It stinks!

The Millennials who've been brainwashed to believe that socialism is the only way to security, peace, equality and perennial free care from cradle to grave are simply unaware of past and present history.

Have you watched what is going on in Venezuela, Hong Kong and Russia? People in those countries long for the freedom and opportunities we have here. Have you ever asked yourself why?

The only religion socialist regimes accept is atheism. There is no acceptance of God. There is no ownership of private property, thus there are no real entrepreneurs. If you can't own your own property there is no incentive for people to make a profit. So far as I know, entrepreneurs are first to depart a country that is turning away from capitalism. Without entrepreneurs, businesses generally fail. You can give up the idea of getting social welfare in a communist country. And by now everyone knows the first thing you won't have is a gun. So perhaps you should be practicing accuracy with the slingshot if you are contemplating living under socialism.

Paying for a mistake

Dear editor:

Everyone's favorite topic, and something we can all agree we hate, is property tax. It was reported that someone made an error on vehicles and in 2020 you'll pay more for their error. Does that sound fair? As a citizen, you didn't make the mistake, so why should you pay for it?

I mean, it's not like they work with you if you have something happen and can't pay. Or if they make a mistake they fix it and give you your money back ... just sorry about that.

Sure, make people pay, Shannon Sharp. But first, you should resign for the error and take responsibility for it. Also maybe apologize to the people affected. While I'm on the subject, since the volunteer fire departments have decided to dip into the property tax I feel maybe we should get some real firefighters and real fire stations. I mean, since it is tax money paying for it now. Should they be using those vehicles with all the lights to go to Walmart?

Also, can we use property tax for some road repair and maybe better educational programs at schools instead of wasting it on athletics? Knowing how to throw a football is great. But having a fully stocked library and tutoring programs or anything geared toward learning would be a lot better.

In my humble opinion, property tax is the worst tax ever thought of. I mean, paying taxes on things I already paid taxes on. Yet I never see improvements in town or the county. They even have reasons not to move to Arkansas besides our drug problem, property tax is the number one reason these sites say to avoid Arkansas. But the good old boys club will do what they will ... remember to vote!
