Jones wins 3 events as HSU defeats Rhodes

MEMPHIS -- Henderson State's men's swimming team got back to its winning ways on Saturday after falling Friday in the first meet of the spring semester.

The Reddies fought past Rhodes College, 116-88, in dual meet action. Delta State won, 159-62, at home on Friday in Cleveland, Miss.

Henderson's women won four events on Saturday but still fell to Rhodes, 114-91. Delta State's women's team was also victorious, 164-68, on Friday for senior day.

Stephen Jones led the way for Henderson on Saturday and showed his versatility by picking up wins in three events. He won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.65, the 200-yard backstroke in 1:53.98 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:11.10.

Oscar Patten picked up the only other individual win for Henderson in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:55.77. The team of Tom Nguyen, Jason Seiner, Caleb Murders and Patten won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.48.

It was a team effort for the Reddies. Team members took the top spots in the 50-yard freestyle and the top four spots in the 500-yard free, as well as the second, third and fourth places in the 400-yard individual medley to amass 42 points in those three events alone.

On the women's side, Ceci Magnani took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 11:07.89, while Savannah Martin won the 50-yard freestyle at 25.64. Elza Kachliishvili touched the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:26.01 to round out the individual winners for the Reddies and the team of Elam Fulton, Eleonora Unanova, Jordan Adkins, and Martin won the 400-yard free relay in the final event of the day.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Adkins, Martin, Unanova and Ardyn Wilson took first place with a time of 1:45.04 on Friday at Delta State. The team of Magnani, Amy Brandenburg, Emma Sewell and Lara Kockaya finished second in 1:48.62 to help Henderson sweep all 15 points in the event.

Fulton took home two second place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.18 and the 50-yard freestyle at 25.07 to pick up eight total points. Unanova finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:21.09 and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:01.47 to tally six points.

Jones led the men on Friday with eight points in second place finishes. He earned second-place points in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.24 and the 100-yard butterfly at 54.77.

Other second place finishers for the Reddies included Nguyen, who took the silver in the 50-yard freestyle at 22.11; Murders, who got four points in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.12l and Patten, who grabbed second in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:54.89.

Henderson will be back in the pool on Saturday when both teams face the University of the Ozarks for senior day at the Duke Wells Natatorium.
