Cobras alone in 2nd after beating Atkins

FOUNTAIN LAKE -- Fountain Lake's senior high boys' basketball team moved back into sole position in second place in the 3A-4 conference Friday with a 64-50 home victory against Atkins at Irvin J. Bass Gymnasium-Sammy Lambert Court.

The Cobras (17-4, 7-2) dropped into a tie for second place following a 59-54 home loss to Jessieville (15-6, 6-3) on Tuesday. The Lions were bested by conference leader Booneville (19-1, 9-0), 50-47, on Friday at Jessieville Sports Arena.

Fountain Lake is back alone in second place going into Tuesday's road game at Two Rivers (4-18, 1-8). The Cobras are scheduled to host the Bearcats on Thursday.

Atkins (5-12, 1-8) trailed just 14-13 after Friday's opening quarter. Fountain lake moved ahead, 29-20, by halftime and took a 49-34 lead into the final quarter.

The Cobras were led by 20 points from junior Colton McMullin. Seniors Ahman Johnson and Joe Murphy added 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Sophomore Michael Dunagan scored 13 points for the Red Devils. Senior Trey Davis contributed 12 points.

* Fountain Lake edged out visiting Atkins, 38-37, in overtime Friday in the junior high boys' game.

The junior Red Devils held an 8-4 lead after the first quarter, but they fell behind, 18-15, by halftime. The junior Cobras (12-4) were outscored in the third quarter to make the score 27-27 entering the final frame. Both teams scored seven points in the fourth to force the overtime period at 34-all.

Colby Lambert led the junior Cobras in scoring with 11 points.

Fountain Lake's junior boys are scheduled to next play on Tuesday at Two Rivers.

Girls

One of the co-leaders of the 3A-4 conference was able to pull away from Fountain Lake's senior high girls on Friday at Irvin J. Bass Gymnasium-Sammy Lambert Court.

Fountain Lake (5-16, 0-9) led Atkins (17-3, 8-1), 8-6, after the opening quarter Friday. The score was knotted, 24-24, at halftime, but the Lady Cobras moved ahead again, 37-36, by the start of the fourth quarter.

Atkins outscored the host team, 20-6, in the fourth quarter to take a 56-43 conference victory. The Lady Red Devils are tied atop the 3A-4 standings with Lamar (17-3, 8-1) and Two Rivers (16-6, 8-1).

Sophomore Presley Hamric led the Lady Cobras with 22 points. Senior Cherokee Fields finished with eight points.

Fountain Lake will play again on Tuesday at Two Rivers before hosting Booneville (3-13, 1-8) on Thursday.
