Bearcats hang on to edge Troy

While the Trojan defense held the visiting Bearcats to 150 yards total on offense, Mena managed to hold on for a 10-6 win over Hot Springs Friday night at Tommy J. Holt Field at Joe C. Reese Stadium.

The Trojans (1-1) managed to get on the board first with a 36-yard pass by sophomore quarterback Isaac Shelor to senior Malik Brewer for a touchdown with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was no good leaving Hot Springs ahead with a 6-0 lead.

The Bearcats (3-0) avoided a scoreless opening period as senior quarterback Zane Stephens connected with junior Gaven Hooper for a 24-yard pass for a score with just 58 seconds before the break to even the spread. Junior Jet Hernandez kicked the extra point for a 7-6 edge.

Mena picked up its final points on a 23-yard field goal by sophomore Evan Graves in the waning moments of the third frame.

Shelor was 10-for-20 for 153 yards with one score and one interception, and he had a pair of rushes for one yard.

Junior Carlos Brewer carried the ball 14 times while rushing for 50 yards, and he snagged a pair of passes for 30 yards.

Sophomore Pierce Smalley reeled in threee catches for 33 yards, Malik Brewer collected three for 76 yards and one touchdown and senior Trent Gordon had two catches for 14.

Junior Adrian Conway paced the Trojans defensively with one sack for an 13-yard loss, and David Carter had an interception.

The Trojans will travel to Pearcy to take on Lake Hamilton, and Mena will be off until Sept. 27.
