Hospice volunteers add life to long days

SENIOR SCENE: Hospice Home Care

Hospice Home Care volunteers across Arkansas log nearly 1,000 hours each month providing companionship, comfort, and support to patients and their families during the end-of-life journey. During this era of uncertainty, when time is short, but the days are long, comfort is knowing that there are individuals willing to bridge the gap for isolated hospice patients.

It may look a little different right now, but volunteers and staff are continuing to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and more with hospice patients and their families. It's important to those patients who may not see another special day and celebrate. It is on the heart and mind of each hospice volunteer to add life to each day for each patient.

No matter the task, caring volunteers have a genuine desire to make a profound difference in the lives of others. Hospice volunteers are truly compassionate people that say volunteering in this way gives them a deeper appreciation and satisfaction for life.

Hospice Home Care provides many avenues for volunteers to join the professional, clinical and administrative office teams. Currently, volunteers are working to support efforts to delight patients remotely, or from a safe distance.

We encourage anyone who has a heart for volunteering to lend their time and talents as their heart leads them. Examples include preparing gifts and recognition items to encourage patients and their families; baking cookies, snacks, food, necessities and preparing deliveries for staff who use protective gear; organizing and keeping food pantry inventories; seasonal window decorating for holidays and other projects; and bereavement support (telephone calls, composing notes) to family members.
