CHI Rehab recognized as among top 10%

CHI St Vincent Hot Springs Rehabilitation Hospital has been recognized in the top 10% of inpatient rehabilitation facilities, out of 868, in the United States.

"We've received that award every year since we've been opened, so this is our fourth year to receive this award," hospital CEO Janette Daniels said. "It really means a lot to myself and my staff that we can provide some of the best outcomes in the nation here in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and to be able to provide that to our citizens is very important to me."

In the hospital's four years, Daniels said it has had a huge impact on the community.

"We're the only free-standing rehabilitation hospital in Hot Springs, and I think it's been really good for the community in the fact that we have been able to take these patients who have suffered from strokes, who have suffered from weakness after surgery and just multiple other diagnoses, and we're able to get them strengthened and then they get to go back home to their loved ones," she said.

"And that's our ultimate goal," Daniels said, "that they go back home to the community and over 80% of our patients go home to the community versus having to go to a nursing home. I think if we weren't here more patients would have to become residents of a nursing home rather than spending that time with their families."

The hospital, which is a partner of Encompass Health, is a 40-bed inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital. It was recently named within the top 10% inpatient rehabilitation facilities that qualified to be ranked in the IRF database of Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation for cases discharged between January 2019 and September 2019, an Encompass Health news release said.

"The rankings were determined by using UDSMR's program evaluation model (PEM), a case mix-adjusted and severity-adjusted tool that provides facilities with a composite performance score and percentile ranking drawn from nearly three-quarters of all IRFs in the country," it said. "The goal of the PEM Report Card is to recognize high-performing facilities for their delivery of quality patient care that is effective, efficient, timely and patient-centered."

Troy Hillman, manager of the Analytical Services Group at UDSMR, said in the release that with over 30 years of experience and data, UDSMR continues working with the industry to establish "best practices."

"The PEM Report Card has served as a tool for identifying and recognizing high-performing facilities, working with them to learn how they provide efficient and effective care, and sharing what we learn with others to elevate the performance of all," Hillman said. "We look forward to working with CHI St Vincent Hot Springs Rehabilitation Hospital and the other top-performing facilities across the country that rank in the top 10 percent to improve care in all inpatient rehabilitation facilities."
