Virtual Old Time Music event set for Tuesday

Old Time Music will return to the Garland County Library virtually Tuesday night on the library's Facebook page.

Prior to the pandemic, the library held a concert series called the Arkansas Highlands Folk Project. This was to be a three-part series, but the final show was canceled last year due to COVID-19.

"We're really going to pick up where we left off in February 2020," Charlie Moore, event organizer, said of the virtual event, which will not feature live music.

Instead, Moore has found examples of Old Time Music -- music from the 1930s and older -- created and played by modern string bands. Moore said each video will be shown with the permission of the musicians and singers.

Moore said he has been "working off and on for about two months" on the project, contacting the different bands and getting their permission to show their videos. "Everyone who's playing has given permission and their blessing," he said.

While the performances will not be live, Moore and Paul Kagebein, the library's adult services programmer, will be speaking live during the event. Moore said he will be doing a question-and-answer session.

In addition to entertaining people with the videos, Moore said the goal of the project is to unearth some of the lost musical history in the area.

"Our mission is simply to spread the word about the history (of) music that was in our area (that has) not been documented," he said.

This will be the first of these virtual events at the library covering this topic. A second one is scheduled for Feb. 23, and Moore said if the two events are successful they would like to do a third one in the future.

The event starts at 6 p.m. on the library's Facebook page. Viewers can post questions during the event, or questions can be emailed earlier to [email protected].
