Visitors and regular users of the thermal jug fountain at the former Libbey Memorial Physical Medicine Center will have to find another option beginning Monday while repairs are being made.

A news release from Hot Springs National Park said the fountain would be closed starting Monday "for maintenance on a broken waterline."

HSNP Facility Manager Mark Scott said the break was discovered due to water leaking near the edge of the street.

"We are working with the city to cut the street and uncover the line to determine exactly what caused the leak," he said via email. "We really will not know what repairs are needed until that happens."

Scott said the cut into the street should not create any traffic issues.

"The cut will be near the edge of the street and should cause no traffic problems," he said.

While the extent of the repairs cannot be determined until work starts Monday, Scott said the national park hopes to be able to complete the repairs in one day. The fountain will remain open until Monday morning, he said.

"The water is still on to the fountain," he said. "It will be shut off Monday morning prior to digging. This will have no effect on the other fountains. They will be running (normally)."

There are two alternate thermal water jug fountains located in front of the HSNP Administration Building on Reserve Street and in Hill Wheatley Plaza.

Scott said the Libbey jug fountain accounts for approximately 180,000 gallons each month. The fountain at the Administration Building supplies around 240,000 gallons each month.
