Tiny Temper scores Azeri Stakes upset

Dallas Stewart had more faith in his Azeri Stakes starter Saturday than the betting public that the name of Tiny Temper goes on the list of race winners with two Kentucky Oaks heroes in this decade and a future Horse of the Year (Havre de Grace in 2011) came from rolling the dice and scoring the jackpot at Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort.

The former Wayne Lukas assistant won the Grade 2 $400,000 Azeri with a horse in its stakes debut and fifth start.

Tiny Temper represented deceased sire Arrogate in the Larry Snyder Winner's Circle after a pulsating neck decision over Misty Veil, the latter going through a sale after winning the Pippin here Jan. 6.

Nearly 600 honor Brown by running in annual race

Lake Hamilton hosted its 14th annual Adam Brown Shamrock Run Saturday morning, a 5K race organized by Brown's friend Rachel Mundy that attracts people from all over the world who have been touched by his story.

Adam Brown, a native of Hot Springs, was a member of Navy SEAL Team Six who died in Afghanistan in March 2010.

"As a result of his story, his dedication, his willingness to overcome adversity through his life, individuals like Rachel basically established this annual honoring of Adam, and so this has turned into an incredible event," Brown's childhood friend Richard Williams said.

Angling Rams: Martin becomes first angler to sign letter of intent

Lakeside senior Cole Martin signed his national letter of intent last week to be a collegiate angler for the University of Montevallo fishing team.

When pen hit paper, Martin became the first Ram in school history to sign a college scholarship as an angler.

"It feels good, especially going to Montevallo next year with them being No. 1 in the nation," he said. "I have a long journey ahead and I am ready to sign up there."

Tigers baseball off to strongest start ever

Despite falling the first two games of a two-day, four-game stint at Bible Baptist College in Ozark, Mo., Sunday, the Champion Christian College baseball team is off to its best start in program history.

Tigers head baseball coach Don Schultheis said earlier last week that the first nine games were amazing.

"We are 8-1, which is the best start in program history," he said. "We are doing a lot of good things. The future is bright."

Beyond the Diamond with J'ville's Broc Mayr

Jessieville High School senior center fielder Broc Mayr has been an impact player for the Lions baseball team.

Head coach Ryan O'Neal said Mayr has great power and speed, and is able to stretch hits into extra bases.

Mayr recently met with The Sentinel-Record to give people a glimpse into what he is like off the diamond.

Torres shines on Sunday, wins 4 for track-best 53

The second jockey to win 100 races in a season at Oaklawn is halfway there again.

A natural hat trick completed a four-bagger Sunday for Cristian Torres. Last year's meet leader with 100 victories, exceeded at the track only by Hall of Famer Pat Day (137) in 1986. Torres has 53 winners.

From 283 mounts, he is winning at a 19-percent clip with 44 seconds and 34 thirds. Keith Asmussen is a distant second with 30 wins, Francisco Arrieta next with 29 and Emmanuel Esquivel fourth with 28.

WEDNESDAY

Jade (Cunningham) sparkles with 1st career training win

Jade Cunningham had some special horsemen in the cheering section after the trainer's first career victory.

Spankster ($71.20) may have fooled the betting public in Saturday's Oaklawn opener but not two of her former bosses before she went out on her own last summer.

Wayne Lukas, who counts Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher as a former assistant, employed Cunningham during the 2021 Oaklawn meeting. She then oversaw Dallas Stewart's Oaklawn division the past two seasons.

Nighthawks bound for Danville: Team uses lone loss as fuel headed to nationals

The National Park College Nighthawks will be the 5-seed at the NJCAA Division II National Basketball Tournament at the Mary Miller Center in Danville, Illinois.

Their first game is March 18, at 6 p.m., against 12-seed Johnson County.

The 20-team tournament comprises the 16 regional champions and four at-large bids.

Beyond the Diamond with Jessieville's Bailey Fisher

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Jessieville High School senior right-handed pitcher Bailey Fisher has been an impact player for the Lions softball team so far this season.

Head coach Tony Freeman said Fisher brings a hard-work mentality and enthusiasm to the team.

She is also known for staying late at practice, working to get better.

THURSDAY

Wolves down Rams in 12 innings

PEARCY -- Seven innings were not enough at Lake Hamilton, Tuesday, as the Wolves defeated Lakeside, 3-2, in 12-inning battle.

Lake Hamilton head coach Matt Weigand said it was 12 innings of good baseball.

"Good pitching, good defense, we were just waiting for that timely hit and Landon West, man, he delivered," he said.

Lakeside's Class 5A Coach of the Year reflects on runner-up season in wrestling

The Lakeside boys wrestling team enjoyed a solid season, finishing runner-up last month in the Class 5A State Championship at the Stephens Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, while guided by a coach who took the Class 5A Coach of the Year.

The Rams, with 130 points, finished behind first-place Van Buren, who three-peated with 173 points, while Greenwood took third place with 97 points.

Lakeside head wrestling coach H. E. Burchard said the Wrestling Rams' success came as a result of pure team effort.

'Sierra' high in Derby future book

In yet another Kentucky Derby without Bob Baffert, racing fans look elsewhere for the May 4 winner at Churchill Downs.

Turf specialist Chad Brown has won the Preakness twice and finished second to future Triple Crown hero Justify in the 2018 Derby.

Brown-trained Sierra Leone, last-out Grade 2 winner of the Risen Star at Fair Grounds, is the preliminary 5-1 favorite in the fifth pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which begins a three-day run at 11 a.m. Friday.

Musselman on U of L's radar? Could be

The team that formerly played in Freedom Hall and toils on Denny Crum Court at its spanking-new downtown arena hard by the Ohio River is job hunting in its highest-profile sport.

Louisville ended the Kenny Payne experiment Wednesday after two seasons with a 12-52 record.

That didn't go over in the Bluegrass State, where Kentucky, despite not winning the NCAA title in 12 years, is still going strong under John Calipari.

SATURDAY

Hawthorn's no-hitter leads CMS over Kirby

Cutter Morning Star junior pitcher Jalea Hawthorn threw a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts on Thursday at Eagle Field as the Eagles cruised to a 9-0 victory over Kirby.

Cutter remains undefeated on the season at 7-0, and No. 1 in the Arkansas Class 2A-5.

"She pitched really well today," Cutter head coach Donnie Pogue said after the game. "Not only is she a great athlete and softball player, she's an unbelievable kid. Works hard, does everything you ask, great leader, so really proud of her. Good day for her."

Moquett seeks title in Whitmore Stakes

What could be more fitting than for the man who trained Whitmore, one of the greatest horses to run at Oaklawn, to win the Whitmore Stakes?

That's Ron Moquett's goal this afternoon at Oaklawn, the day before revelers of all ages dress in green for St. Patrick's Day with pro football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith grand marshal of the parade on Bridge Street downtown.

Today's 11 races, with two stakes, begin at noon.

Lakeside sophomore competes nationally in Boston

Allie Quast, a sophomore at Lakeside High School, recently returned from Boston where she competed in the New Balance National Indoor Track and Field Meet on March 10.

Ranked third in her class in the pole vault, and 51st overall, Quast tied for 10th place at the event, clearing a new personal-best 12 feet, 3.5 inches.

As one of only two sophomores to jump at the meet, she has become one of the top pole vaulters in the state in her three years of competing.

Robertson sends out 'X' factors

Look out, ol' Mac is back with those two Xtreme horses for some prized Minnesota clients.

That's almost enough to make a rival trainer say "Eek!" like Bobby Darin in the 1959 pop classic "Mack the Knife."

Consequently, Oaklawn picked up only two new runners and six overall for today's $200,000 Purple Martin for 3-year-old fillies.

SUNDAY

Lakeside student takes rodeo talents across the state

LillyKate Lindsey is a 10-year-old fourth grade student at Lakeside Intermediate School but she is also an avid horse rider, competing in rodeos all over the state with her horse, Pistol.

Recently qualifying for the Youth World Barrel Racing Championship this July in Perry, Georgia, Lindsey has competed in many youth events, even competing in barrel races against adult riders.

Along with rodeo barrel racing, she competes in pole bending, which, she notes, is her favorite.

Morse code signals victory

Unlike last time, a photo finish was not required to determine if a filly trained by Randy Morse prevailed in the $200,000 Purple Martin Stakes.

It wasn't the one that the majority of Oaklawn bettors predicted but was the second on Saturday for co-owner Morse, this one also racing for Randy Patterson and Sam Vogel. Call it a win-win (or winplace) finish for the soft-spoken trainer.

Jockey Emmanuel Esquivel earned a sweet victory on Asternia after being nosed out on Blue Squall in the $150,000 Dixie Belle Feb. 17.

Traveler checks home first in Whitmore

The Old Boy himself led the post parade for the third Whitmore Stakes and Jaxon Traveler later Saturday entered the Oaklawn winner's circle.

First, they ran it by the track photographer, who snapped a near dead-heat at the wire.

Make it two stakes wins in Hot Springs for 6-yearold Jaxon Traveler and seven this racing season for trainer Steve Asmussen, who may have champagne on ice for his record-extending 13th Oaklawn title.
