Library offers second chance at Mah Jongg

A second section of a beginner’s Maj Jongg class has formed due to popular demand at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave.

The class will meet weekly starting Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and conclude on Oct. 7. There will be no class Sept. 16.

The game, which originated in China and is played with tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, will be taught by Katya Carney, a player with many years of teaching experience.

“When I moved to Hot Springs many years ago, I was disappointed that I couldn’t find anyone to play Mah Jongg with, so I started teaching people,” Carney said.

“I love the game and it’s a joy for me to be able to share it.”

“The response to the first class was overwhelming,” said Amy Shipman, who is organizing the classes for the library. “We’re adding a second one and it’s already almost full from the waiting list for the first one. We want people to know that there are a few spaces left, though.”

Mah Jongg classes are free and game sets will be provided by the instructor.

The form of the game is not Federation League Mah Jongg.

Registration is required. The class is for beginners only and those who have taken previous Mah Jongg classes at the library are not eligible.

Call the library at 623-4161 or 922-4483 to reserve a place or for more information.
