Concert assists young talent in musical studies

The Muses Project's Young Artist Program Presents: "From the Heart," a benefit concert for countertenor Matthew Walker at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Muses Cultural Arts Center, 428 Orange St.

The concert is free, but a love offering will be accepted to assist Walker, a Henderson State University senior, in furthering his musical studies.

"This will be fabulous evening of live music spanning numerous composers, eras, and shows. It will also include a painting created live during the show that will be available for auction at the show's conclusion, as well as a cookie reception to meet the performers," a news release said.

The concert is an offering "from the heart" of a young musician who is striving for musical excellence through education and performance.

Walker has performed in several Muses productions throughout the year and is an "extraordinary and passionate Henderson music student with a rare and beautiful voice."

He will be joined on stage by fellow "Reddies," sopranos Paige Chastain, Taylor McNatt, and Danielle Hudgens, tenor Casey Williams, baritone Jeremiah Watson, bass Milton Moreno, and pianist Hunter Mabry, organist Greg Simmons and teacher and pianist William Trantham, along with collaborative artist Christina Hubbard.

The Muses Educational Outreach Young Artist Program offers young aspiring vocalists and musicians access to mentorship and further training in collaboration with seasoned professional performers.

As a result, students like Walker are given the rare opportunity to hone their skills by performing alongside professionals in various Muses productions.

"The Muses are delighted to provide its Cultural Arts Center to support the efforts of these extraordinary students as they showcase their skills acquired at Henderson," the release said.
