Sandra Slicko is beginning a new role in a newly created position at Lake Hamilton Elementary School as the reading interventionist.

Slicko is now in her 37th year in education. She has taught second grade for the past nine years.

Th reading interventionist position aims to help all students become better readers and writers. Slicko will work with students in a small group setting this year using the Guided Reading Plus program for reading and writing.

The goal is to provide students with additional small group reading and writing help so that they can achieve their grade level goals. The small group atmosphere is intended to enable students to be successful and get the help and attention that they deserve.

"We are very pleased to have Sandra Slicko serving as the Lake Hamilton Elementary School's Reading Interventionist," said Kristi Anderson, director of Instructional Services and Federal Programs. "Sandra is a Reading and Language Arts Nationally Board Certified Teacher with many years of teaching experience. She will use her vast knowledge in teaching reading as she works with second- and third-grade students on intense reading intervention strategies."

Students will be in a group with five other students who will utilize a 30-minute framework that includes a reading and writing phase. The different interventions will be provided as needed to promote the students acceleration in reading and writing.

During the first two weeks of school, Slicko visited every classroom where she introduced herself to all of the students and read them short stories. While in each classroom, she is focusing on building relationships with the students so that they would know her and feel her love of reading and writing.
