Suspect who allegedly fled deputy on 4-wheeler arrested on felony drug charge

A local man was arrested on felony charges late Monday after he allegedly fled from a Garland County sheriff's deputy on a 4-wheeler and then had suspected methamphetamine in his possession.

Larry Denmon Crites, 51, who lists an address of 140 Social Place, was taken into custody shortly before 10 p.m. in the 100 block of Irwin Point and charged with felony fleeing and possession of a controlled substance, meth, each punishable by up to six years in prison.

He was later released on $5,000 bond and is set to appear Aug. 4 in Garland County District Court.

According to reports, GCSD Deputy John Schroeder was watching traffic in the 3600 block of Malvern Avenue when he saw a green 2005 Honda 4-wheeler headed west on Malvern that turned onto Starr Drive.

He said he tried to stop the operator, later identified as Crites, in the 100 block of Starr, but the suspect refused to stop and fled down Starr and then turned left onto Irwin Circle. He continued to Irwin Point where the suspect almost flipped the 4-wheeler and then jumped off it behind Boss Hawg's Bar, 198 Irwin Point.

The deputy caught the suspect just beyond a fence behind the bar and took him custody for felony fleeing.

Upon searching the suspect, the deputy allegedly found a small clear plastic bag inside a cigarette pack that had approximately 1 gram of a clear crystal-like substance that later tested positive for meth.

According to records, Crites was previously convicted of a felony in Texas in 1998, but is not currently on parole or probation.

Adaway

Andrew Drew Adaway, 27, of Hot Springs, who was originally arrested May 31 by Hot Springs police for possession of a controlled substance and three counts of failure to appear, was charged around 4 a.m. Monday with a misdemeanor count of third-degree battery, punishable by up to one year in jail.

Bond on the new charge was set at $1,000 and Adaway remained in custody Tuesday with his other bonds totaling $10,000 and is set to appear Thursday in Garland County District Court.

According to the affidavit, on Monday morning, GCSD Cpl. Robert Zander interviewed the alleged victim, Christopher D. Sublett, 30, of Hot Springs, who has been incarcerated since his arrest July 17 on four counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Sublett stated that shortly after 12:30 a.m. Saturday he was in his cell and shortly after deputies came through doing a head count of inmates that one of the other inmates in his cell, identified as Adaway, got off the bottom bunk and said something to the effect "If I can't sleep, nobody's going to sleep."

Then Adaway allegedly struck Sublett several times in the face and then pulled him and his sleeping mat off the top bunk onto the floor where Adaway continued to hit him in the face.

The assault reportedly continued until deputies came and removed Sublett to an observation room and took Adaway to a segregation cell. Sublett noted he and Adaway had no issues between them prior to the attack.

The report notes Sublett had many cuts on his face, lips and left ear, a large swelling in the area of his left temple and bruising around his left eye. He was transported by LifeNet to CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs around 1 a.m. where he was treated and returned to the detention center around 5 a.m.
