City in compliance with turbidity guidelines

City officials said Thursday that a report from the Arkansas Department of Health shows the city is 100 percent in compliance, 100 percent of the time, with guidelines for raw, settled and finished water turbidities.

Statewide, the report shows that, of 79 surface water systems, 65 percent failed to meet the goal of finished water turbidity of 0.10 nephelometric turbidity units 95 percent of the time, a city news release said.

Water samples from the Lakeside and Ouachita water treatment plants were analyzed according to the categories of highest daily raw, settled and finished turbidity; highest daily finished water turbidity; and frequency of occurrence for highest daily finished water turbidity.

The city voluntarily participates in ADH's Arkansas Surface Water Optimization Program, which is designed to maximize public health protection from microbial contaminate and to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, the release said.

"Since the quality of raw water available for us to treat is not always optimal in terms of turbidity, city staff's ability to manage available resources and consistently produce a superior product is nothing short of astounding," said Utilities Director Scott Bundy.

"This impressive achievement is a testament to our water treatment staff's commitment to providing our customers with the highest quality water," he said.
