Senior Olympics begin weekend run

Arkansas Senior Olympics resumes today with three sports and begins in earnest Friday at various Hot Springs and Garland County venues.

National Park Community College is host to badminton with men's and women's singles at 9 a.m., men's and women's doubles at 2 p.m. and mixed doubles at 3 p.m. Table-tennis matches begin at 8 a.m. at First Church of Nazarene and golf at 8:30 a.m. at Hot Springs Country Club.

Track and field, at Hot Springs High's Reese Memorial Stadium, starts at 9 a.m. Friday with events including discus, high jump, javelin, 400-meter walk and 1,500-meter race walk and road race. Also on Friday, bowling begins at Fiesta Lanes in Hot Springs Village and tennis at Hot Springs Country Club. A sponsors' reception at 5:30 p.m. Friday precedes a celebratory dinner for athletes at HSCC.

Lake Catherine State Park and Visitors' Center and National Park Community College will be host to cycling events Saturday and Sunday.

Hot Springs-based Senior Arkansas Sports Organization sponsors the Arkansas Senior Olympics annually with anyone 45 or over by Dec. 31 eligible. Most events are in five-year divisions for ages 50 and up, although some sports are open to ages 45-49.

Arkansas is an "open" state, encouraging out-of-state residents to participate. A first-place winner from Arkansas is crowned in all events with those in selected medal sports qualifying for the 2015 National Senior Olympics. Ribbons go to top finishers in certain recreational sports.

Balanced Rams top

White Hall, Malvern

Chandler Cain's 35 led balanced scoring as Lakeside cruised past White Hall and Malvern on Tuesday at Hot Springs Country Club.

Caleb McRae and Cameron McRae both shot 37 and Jake Palmer 38, Lakeside finishing 19 strokes ahead of White Hall at 147. White Hall's Jake McNulty shot 38, and Zach Lemming's 43 paced Malvern (215).

The two-team girls match was tighter, Lakeside's Rai Pullin tying White Hall's Canryn Ruggri for medalist honor at 45 in an eight-stroke Lady Ram win. Gracen Blout's 49 and Haleigh Homer's 52 gave Lakeside a 146.

Lakeside plays El Dorado today at HSCC.

Volleyball: Perryville-M. Pine

MOUNTAIN PINE -- Perryville won the last two games for a 3-1 victory over Mountain Pine here Tuesday.

Hailee Crosby had six aces and seven kills for the Lady Red Devils in the 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 27-25 decision. Kaitlyn Miller had three aces and two kills and Kayla Snow two digs for Mountain Pine, which plays Jessieville at home Monday.
