LH junior track teams sweep conference titles

CONWAY -- Freshman Cody Weldon led Lake Hamilton domination in both events with two running victories Thursday in the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference track meet.

The Wolves won the meet 123-102 over Russellville. The same schools were one-two in the girls' division, Lake Hamilton prevailing 139-129.

Weldon clocked 2:08.04 at 800 meters and 4:51.23 in the 1,600 run. Lake Hamilton eighth-grader Colby Lowe finished second in both events (2:11.56, 4:54.99) and ninth-grade teammate Abraham Liera third in the 1,600 (5:03.38).

Lake Hamilton underclassmen scored 23 points in the pole vault, eighth-grader Michael Harris winning at 14 feet, 1 inch and classmate Haze Farmer clearing 11 feet for second. Eighth-grader John Haak and seventh-grader Bradyn Clark also scored in the event.

Lake Hamilton's other victories came in the 4x400 relay (3:43.37) and from freshman William Burgess in the shot put (48-3.25). Seventh-grader Latrell Young placed third in the 100-meter dash.

Lady Wolf ninth-graders Josie Carson and Darby Dunn each won two events, Dunn leading Lake Hamilton's top-four sweep in the pole vault.

Carson, reigning Class 6A girls cross country champion, took the 800 in 2:32.53 and the 1,600 in 5:37.79. Dunn won the 100 hurdles in 16.39 seconds and vaulted 8 feet, 6 inches, winning the latter event with fewer misses than runner-up Denise Tang. Edie Murray and Caitlyn Porter also scored in the pole vault.

The Lady Wolves won the 4x400 relay in 4:25.73 and eighth-grader Mason Atkin took the discus (97-4). Seventh-grader Maliha Crockett placed third at 400 meters as did the Lady Wolves' 4x100 relay.

Local athletes win 5

events in 5A-South

De QUEEN -- Though their schools were outdistanced in the team standings, Garland County athletes posted five individual victories in the 5A-South junior-high track meet here Thursday.

Lakeside freshman Emily Milbourn took two races for girls, the 800 meters in 2:30.34 and the 1,600 in 5:42.53. Lady Ram classmate Gracen Blount won the 100 hurdles (17.69) and placed second in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches), the long jump (15-0.25) and the triple jump.

Hot Springs freshman Zaysia King (33-7) edged Blount (33-1) for first in the triple jump. Lady Trojan ninth-grader Imani Honey, a key late-season acquisition for the school's Class 5A championship basketball team, led a Garland County top-three sweep at 400 meters. Honey was clocked in 1:07.08, Lakeside freshman Bre Ezelle second in 1:08.94 and Hot Springs eighth-grader Seraya Campbell third in 1:09.30.

Hot Springs' girls placed second in the 4x100 (54.06) and 4x400 (4:48.45) relays. Lady Trojan Jamie Broadway finished third in the shot put (36-3.5) and the discus (76-1).

Ninth-grader Ford Gismond had the only victory among local boys, going 24.08 seconds in the 200-meter dash and helping Lakeside place fourth overall (43 points). Hot Springs was sixth with 33 points.

De Queen breezed to both team titles, the boys with 253.5 points and the Lady Leopards with 196.5 points. Magnolia was second in each division (boys 131, girls 132). Lakeside outpointed Hot Springs 86-82 for the girls' third-place award.

golfers hold first tourney

DANVILLE -- Garland County Seniors Golf Association members crowned champions in three divisions in their first tournament of the year here Wednesday at Chamberlyne Country Club.

Richard Hollis, Steve Williams, Richard Alan and T.J. McCoy won the first flight. Deotis Cotton, David Rider, Steve McGlynn and John Osmond took the second flight, and Larry Thye, Bill Drews, Jim Moore and George Grauberger captured the third flight.

Second-place finishers, by flight, were Tim Tallent, Joe Woods, Kevin Woods and David Hope, first Jack Skelton, Jim Webb, Bill Behan and Ralph Bloemker, second and William Gensler, Keith Pochert, John Shrock and Roger Hanebutt, third.
