Planners help BMS students

BISMARCK -- Most students that come to Bismarck Middle School have likely gotten used to utilizing the academic planners provided by the school to keep track of daily assignments and due dates.

Students did not always have that resource available to them.

In September 2014, some faculty members approached Principal Michael Spraggins, saying that students were having trouble with staying organized. To help minimize the problem, they decided using planners would help to keep Bismarck students organized.

Some students may not particularly enjoy using planners, but most students appear to write in their planners regularly, according to Spraggins and counselor Denise Rogers. Teachers check the planners periodically to make sure students are writing important information in them.

While there might be a few students who fuss about using the planners, the calendars help teach organizational skills which can help students now and in the future.

"Middle School is the busiest time most kids have ever known because of added homework, extra-curricular activities, social circles and all kinds of other things," Rogers said.

"It's easy to forget the most important responsibilities, so the planners are designed to help students remember their obligations and keep a little bit of order in their lives," she added.

The plan for now is to continue to allow students to keep track of their assignments and due dates in the planners.
